The (a) section of the second stage was a 179 km road stage from Medway to Portsmouth. It was won by Julian Dean of US Postal Service, with team-mate George Hincapie in second. Ireland's Ciaran Power once again finished ninth, with all other Irish coming in with in one minute of Dean, except for Paul Butler who failed to finish the stage.
