The (a) section of the seventh stage was a 143 km road stage from Carlisle to Edinburgh, which was won by Briton Robert Hayles, after he, Stuart O'Grady and Pascal Lino escaped from the peleton. Ciaran Power came in fifth place, with the leader Wauters the only person beating him in the sprint, in a group of 30 or so riders. McNena finished in the peleton. Fitzgerald failed to finish the stage, presumably crashing out.
