Xenogears Unit Cnversions

The raw data was acquired from the North American Squaresoft site. Extra values, such as Seibzhen, Crescens, and the omnigears were taken from the game. All of the calculations were done by me. I noticed a few errors as I was going through the numbers. I corrected them in the tables but gave the original values beneath.

I took a LONG time doing this stuff, so I'd appreciate if you would let me know if you choose to use this. I know a table is available on the Xenogears FAQ but I feel that this is a more complete listing (but I can't be sure, since I haven't seen it myself). Either way, E-mail me before you wish to use this.

Measurement Units

Xenogears Unit S.I. Conversion British Conversion
1 sharl 0.97 metres* 3.18 ft
1 karn 0.981 tonnes 1.081 tons**
1 zeitle*** 62.000 sec 0.017222 hours
1 repsol 0.269 m/sec (0.97 km/hr) 0.603 mi/hr

*The calculation for Brigadier gives 0.964 metres/sharl instead of 0.97. I will treat this as a full 0.97 (which was the ration attained from all of the other gears).
**Vierge's data gives a ratio of 55.08, which is outrageously incorrect. Weltall and Heimdall also give different ratios (1.0822 and 1.0857, respectively). The other gears gave an even 1.080 tons per karn. As a result, I dropped Vierge's weight and averaged the weight of the other gears to get 1.081.
***The values taken for hours/zeitle is the average of the conversions.

Average Gear Specifications

The raw data I based this off of is listed below. However, most of it is simply intuition. I made this up.

In General

  • It seems that most medium military gears are about 16-18 sharl (15.520-17.46 metres) tall. If your gear is short, then he will stand 15 sharl or less; tall gears are 19 sharl and over. (As you can tell, Seibzhen is HUGE.)

  • The average gear is about 16 karn (17.28 tons) unequipped, and 19 karn (20.52 tons) equipped. A heavy gear would be about 25 karn, and an assault gear will probably be close to 30. Light gears would be at about 13-14 karn.

  • The average battery life of a gear is about 500 zeitle (8.611 hours). A gear with poor battery life would hang at about 320 zeitle (5.511 hours), and a gear with good battery life would top 600 zeitle (10.333 hours).

  • A gear's ground speed hangs at about 275 repsol (266.8 km/hr). Fast gears can run over 350 repsol (339.5 km/hr) while a slow gear would move at about 200 repsol (194 km/hr).

  • A gear's air speed is about 800 repsol (776 km/hr). (For the record, most 20th Century aircraft can hit Mach 2 and greater without much effort. This is about 2000 km/hr, so don't have your gear trying to outrun any jets.) A fast gear would be moving at 900 repsol (873 km/hr) and a slow one would move at about 700 repsol (679 km/hr). Remember, not all gears will have air capability, and fuel would be used at a heavier rate.

  • Subgenerator torque (torque is the force that is applied to give an angular acceleration, or, in simpler terms, to make something spin faster) for most gears would probably lie at about 400. I'm not sure if a good torque would be better for a Subgenerator.

  • Main generator coefficient would be around 4.0. A good subgenerator coefficient would be 4.5, while a poor coefficient would be 3.5.

  • An average frame durability would be 240. Good frame durability would reach 340, and a poor frame durability would be 180.

Reaction time for gears seems to average 1.1 (seconds? Zeitle?).

  • Ether induction (which appears to be a value out of 100) seems to be about 40 for most gears. A powerful Ether gear would have 60 and up, and a gear without much use for Ether would have it 30 or lower.

    Raw Data

(Source: Square U.S.A.). Seibzhen's stats from the Xenogears Postcard book, provided by Calis.
    Height
Gear Height (sharl) Height (metres) Height (feet)
    Weltall 16.3 15.811 51.876
    Vierge 15.7 15.229 49.967
    Brigandier* 17.0 16.49 54.104
    Heimdall 16.9 16.393 53.785
    Stier 19.0 18.430 60.469
    El-Stier 19.2 18.624 61.056
    Renmazuo 15.9 15.423 50.603
    El-Renmazuo 18.8 18.236 59.784
    Seibzhen 28.2 27.354 89.676
    Crescens 15.4 14.938 48.972

*In Square's original conversion, you will notice that Bridandier and Heimdall are the same size in metres, but different in sharl. My guess is that Brigandier is actually 16.49 metres (54.104 feet) instead of Square's 16.393 metres.

*Square lists Vierge's weight in karn as 0.2 (which is ridiculously small) and lists its dry tonnage at 11.016. Thus, I went by the tonnage to correct its karn value. (Its equipped weight was 4.7 karn).
