THE INQUISITION

Although the British comedic troupe Monty Python once joked,"Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!", this was, unfortunately, the case for the great majority of its victims throughout it's six-century reign of terror throughout Europe and the New World. By the time the Inquisition finally ended in the 19th Century, countless thousands of Catholics, Protestants, Jews, and native South and Central Americans had lost their lives and properties in autos-de-fe. Just as in the Protestant Witch Hunts of England and the Colonies, a victim received better treatment---perhaps even freedom---if he not only "confessed," but also implicated others in his misdeeds. Thus, the Inquisition was never lacking for souls to "save" or "release" to face God's judgement.

Here you will find historical documents of the Tribunal of the Inquisition, histories of the Inquisitions held throughout the world, an over-view of an Inquisitorial session, and "how-to" manuals written by Bernard Gui---one of the most devout of the Medieval Inquisitors.
