INHALANTS

INHALANTS are violatile substances derived from the ether or chloroform. It is inhaled through the nose to experience intoxication. recently, inhalation of different substances known as "glue-sniffing" has become popular among young people in their early things. These substances include the following:

  • Quick drying glue or plastic cement, like "Rugby".
  • Paint remover and lacquer, such as "thinner" and "solvent".
  • Gasoline and other gasolin-based products.
  • Kerosene or commonly known as "Gaas".
  • Nail Polish and cuticle remover.
  • Lighter fluid and dry cleaning fluid

EFFECTS OF INHALANTS

The use of inhalants may result in the following effects, namely:

  • Unsteadiness and restlessness.
  • Drunkenness with depresion leading to unconciousness.
  • Irratability and highly agitated conditions.
  • Initial excitement thereby losing emotional control.
  • Irritation of the throat and nassal passages.

Some inhalants contain toxic elements that are harmful to the heart and can cause sudden death when inhaled.

ABUSE OF INHALANTS

The abuse of inhalants is isually done using a cloth over the nose and mouth with some of the inhalant on it and inhaling it to get the desire effect. But, the most commonly used method of abuse is by inhaling the substance within a plastic bag.

FIRST AID TREATMENT

  • If a person has a paper or plastic bag covering his entire head, remove it immediately
  • When breathing stops, give the victim artificial respiration
  • Get medical asistance as quick as possible

PENALTY FOR ILLEGAL POSSESSION / USE

6 months and one day to 4 years imprisonment and fine of P600 to P4,000.
