A Counting of Days
The wall runs out of space.
The tics marking off days
Have become the wallpaper of her life.
Day after day
These marks accumulate
Lined up like used matches on the stove.
3280 – She adds another tic.
She knows tomorrow and the day after
Won’t be different,
just another line on the wall.
3287 – Another anniversary day…
She takes the red pen,
crosses out a year’s worth of black marks.
in anger, but in hope
That today he will walk through the door.
