Materias are crystal objects you can find in Final Fantasy VII. Once you find a materia, you can install it on your weapon or armor (Menu screen - Materia) and then gain a new ability. The ability however, only lasts as long as you have the materia installed. It will be removed immediately if you uninstall the materia. Also, each materia gives a different ability. For example: Lightning Materia. This materia allows the user to cast the "Bolt" spell. Ice materia allows the user to cast the "Ice" spell etc. There are 5 types of materia; Magic, Independent, Command, Summon and Support. Clikc on the names at the top to get a full list of each type.
Using Materia
If you want to install materia, go to the Menu screen (Press  on Playstation or "+" on the numeric pad for PC version). Select "Materia" and then a character which you want to use materia with. Select an open slot on either the weapon or armor. Click on the slot and you see a list of materias that are not used. Now choose one and confirm it. The character now uses that materia. When installing a materia, you can also see what changes it will make to your status. It can decrease your Strength and maximum Hp with 0 to 20 percent and increase your Magic power and Mp with 0 to 20 percent.
Materia Growth
Materia can also grow to become more powerful. It grows with Ap. Like Exp. for characters, Ap gives experience to the materias. But only to materias that are currently installed. When you win a battle, you'll see that you gain Exp. and Ap. Once a materia has enough Ap it reaches a new level. Each materia has its own score. Some need 10.000 Ap to reach next level while others need more or less. Also not all materia have the same level height. Some need to be on level 3 while others need to be on level 5 to be mastered.
Master Materia
When all materias of one type are mastered you can exchange them at Cosmo Canyon for one Master Materia. This materia has no drawbacks and contains all spells of that type. These spells also can be cast infinitely. To exchange them go to Bugenhagen's Observatory and examine the huge materias. You can also beat Emerald WEAPON to get a full set of Master materia. Check the Solutions section for more information. Or the Bosses section for information on how to defeat Emerald WEAPON.
Materia Tips

Combining Materia

You can use materia in linked slots so they can work together. Not all materias can work together though. Just try materias out and you'll find some nice combinations.

Overuse of materia

Materia is handy but do not use too much! It will increase your Mp points but sadly, decreases your hitpoints. Look out that your Hp doesn't get lowered too much. Installing several Hp Plus materias work too.

Huge Materias

You can get four huge materias in the game. The hardest to get is the one in the rocket. To get this open the container with this code: Circle - Square - Cross - Cross (PSX version) or Enter - Del - Ins - Ins (Numeric pad, PC version)

Keeping materia
You can carry a maximum of 200 materias. When you have to sell-off materia, sell the most basic materias. These materias are easy to buy back later. A mastered materia can be sold for 1.400.000 Gil!
