Politics and Government in Sri Lanka

The Chief executive in Sri Lanka is president Chandrika Bandaranayake Kumarathunga. Her party the Peoples Alliance (PA) also holds the majority in the parliament.
The main opposition party, the United National Party (UNP), ruled Sri Lanka for 17 years until the last general election in 1994.

Shortly after late president JR Jayawardhana came to power in 1977, The UNP introduced the presidential system of government to Sri Lanka.
(This constitution resembles a collection of the worst aspects of the French, US and British Constitutions.)
Chandrika Kumarathunga won the elections mainly on the promise of abolishing the presidential system within an year of being elected. Three years on she still clings to the presidential system.

Worse still she has been unable to end the civil war that rages in the northen regions of Sri Lanka, and occaisionaly reaces Colombo in the form of a terrorist bomb attack.
The latest of which took place on the 15th of October when the LTTE exploded a truck bomb at the Galadari Hotel car park.
The government with it's part time defence minister has been unable to prevent many of these attacks. It is not being helped by the National Intelligence Beurau which does no work other than hounding journalists.
Another practice inherited from the previous regime, another broken promise... And neither the UNP or the PA have been able to put and end to terrorism in Sri Lanka.
