"The truth is just an excuse for a lack of imagination."
Tinker, tailor, soldier, spy. Oh and lets not forget gardener! All this makes up the most remarkable and intriguing resident of Deep Space Nine, plain, simple Garak. And if you believe that you haven't been watching the show very long!
"My dear doctor, they're all true." "Even the lies?" "Especially the lies!"
Tinker: There doesn't seem to be anything Garak can't do. He can access any computer on the station partly due to his former codes and security clearance. But also due to his ability to hack into any system. He was able to jury rig a device to contact their runabout when he, Tain and Bashir were held prisoners. He was able to enter the abandoned station Empok Nor and clear any booby traps, establish power and artificial gravity all before the Federation Engineers came aboard. Important skills any tailor would need.
"You're either lost or desperately seeking a good tailor."
Tailor: This is what Garak wants everyone to know him as. He even considers himself a good tailor and finds sewing relaxing. Unfortunately his customers have had some complaints about work not being done on time and once his entire shop even blew up. But it's the reason for the late work and destroyed shop that sets Garak apart from your usual neighborhood tailor!
"Lying is a skill like any other and if you want to maintain a level of excellence you have to practice constantly."
Soldier: Garak in his fine tailored suits looks like anything but a soldier but actions speak louder than words. He can fill any position on the Defiant and is as comfortable with a Federation phaser in hand as he is with a Cardassian one. And on Empok Nor he took out two of Cardassia's most elite soldiers of the Third Battalion with great skill and precision. From the bridge of a Romulan Warbird attacking the Founders home world to coordinating an attack on a Ketricel White depot with a Jem'Hadar ship, from hand to hand combat with Klingons to Cardassians, Garak is no ordinary civilian!
"A real intelligence agent has no ego, no conscience, no remorse."
Spy: Now this is the real Garak although he will deny it if asked. Protege and son of the great Enabran Tain, Garak was most definitely a member of the infamous Obsidian Order. Very little is known about his life as a spy except that he had interrogated and executed Gul Dukat's father causing great tension between the two Cardassians. He may have been a Gul on Bajor during the occupation and withdrawal. He may have been in line to take over the Obsidian Order from Tain or he may have attempted to take command of it from Tain. What ever happened, Tain felt betrayed by him and that resulted in his exile. Will we ever know the real reason for for his exile? If he tells us do you think we can believe him?
"You weren't always a tailor." "You're right. I use to be a gardener. Now if you have something you want weeded, you let me know."
Gardener: If we can believe him, Garak was a gardener at the Cardassian embassy on Romulus. Strangely enough, several Romulan dignitaries died at that time. Coincidence? Will we ever know for sure? Do we really want to know? Or would we rather love our plain, simple tailor just the way he is, mysteries intact.
