L...

L-Band

The frequency range from 0.5 to 1.5 GHz. Also used to refer to the 950 to 1450MHz used for mobile communications.

LO

Local Oscillator - An oscillator is a device for producing alternating current; especially : a radio-frequency or audio-frequency generator.

Local Time

A term that is used to mean the time in the local time zone where the Uplink Control System is located..

Longitudinal Time Code

Time code that is recorded on the videotape on a linear audio track rather than in the vertical blanking interval of the video signal. Longitudinal time code is an audio signal that uses 80 bits to assign a numerical value expressed in hours, minutes, seconds, and frames to each and every frame of video.

Low Noise Amplifier (LNA)

This is the preamplifier between the antenna and the earth station receiver. For maximum effectiveness, it must be located as near the antenna as possible, and is usually attached directly to the antenna receive port. The LNA is especially designed to contribute the least amount of thermal noise to the received signal.

Low Noise Block Downconverter (LNB)

A combination Low Noise Amplifier and downconverter built into one device attached to the feed.

Longitudinal/Linear Time Code - LTC

Luminance

The brightness information part of the video signal. Luminance if often designated by the symbol Y. Luminance levels of a video signal are measured on a waveform monitor by viewing in the L-Pass or IRE mode.
