I remember the very first time I came across this word was while checking out
Napoleon, and his many adventures, in a history course.
I believe it was about a concordat with the Pope, or something, in about 1801.
In any event, this is actually what it is -- "when the Pope signs a treaty with the
head of a State". This is usually called a concordate.
Apparently, these treaties begin with the words "In the name of the Most Holy and Indivisible
Trinity". The most recent, though, of the Concordats can be traced back to February 11, 1929, where
the Pope and the King of Italy made a settlement with a view to resolving the so-called Roman Question,
signed at the Lateran.
