Animal Totems

    Every animal is said to have some sort of shamanistic and magical powers to some extent.  It is said that once one has learned to communicate with the animals that the animal can teach the person how to tap into the spirit of that species of animal.    Below is a small list of animals and their powers.  It is not a complete list and far from completely listing what each animal can be invoked for.  We have created this page for the overview of these animals so that one may learn what to look for in order to interpret what powers each totem may or may not have.

Ant Patience, ability to work hard and plan carefully
Antelope Mystic awareness through silence and meditation
Armadillo Protective armor, help set healthy, effective emotional boundaries
Badger Aggressive, fearless, bites and doesn't let go, courage, persistance, ability to form hunting alliances with other species
Bat Invoke to hear message from the dark recesses of the psychic realm, to develop magic abilities.  Invoke bat medicine for rebirth and initiation.
bear Healing, renewal, meditation and ability to grant great shamanistic powers to humans.
beaver Opens new channels of thoughts, houses the unknown for later study
bee Communication, ability to work in harmony and enjoy the nectar of life
bluebird Happiness, joy, luck and contentment
boar Ferocious, aggressive fighting skills, healing, cleverness, courage and protection
bull Power, leadership, protection, mass fertility
butterfly Self transformation, spiritual growth, courage to change
camel Stamina, endurance, conversation
cat Understanding mystery, cleansing, purification, independance, magical powers, mystic visions, sensuality, grace.
cheetah Flexibility and long strides, good for accelerated spiritual progress
coyote Adaptability, cunning wit  **Trickster**
crane Courtship dance creates ritualized bond of love, used for wisdom to create ceremonies that connect to the spirit realm.
crocodile & Plover Plovers are a bird theat protects a crocodile's teeth and gums.  Both sides are needed for an interspecies alliance.
crow **Trickster and Law Giver** Assertive, successful survivor,  good for boldness, shamanic powers, magic and intuition.
deer Ability to quickly detect danger and exit fast, **Renewal**
dog Loyalty and ability to love unconditionality.  Good in time of training or when in need to find something that was thrown away.
dolphin Wisdom, peace, loyalty and harmony.
dove / Pigeon Monogamy, romantic love, loyalty, peace, innocence
duck Develops our patient, loving mothering tendencies.
eagle Courage, fortitude, shmanic powers, illumination, inner visions, inspires us to soar to great heights.
elephant Visits ancestors' burial grounds.  Invoked for longevity, intelligence, awakening ancient memories.
falcon Great Hunter with precision in flight.  Rapid progress, unerring accuracy, sure success.
Flamingo For far journey whether physical or spiritual.  This bird has the longest migration of any ohter being on Earth.
fox Very clever and adaptable.  Alert to every opportunity.  For resourcrfulness, wit, adaptability and cunning.
frog and Toad Associated with rain, for most lay eggs in moisture.  For times of drought or lack of inspiration..
Giraffe For the inspiration to reach for the heights, and just BE!
goat For determination to climb to the summit, playfulness and the ability to absorb nutrition from anything.
gorilla Peaceful conservatist.  Leaves enough edible vegetation for regrowth.  For the wisdom to take care of the Earth.
gull For the ability to soar through life with ease and effortless achievement.  For the ability to journey beyond.  (Recommended reading:  Johnathon Livingston Seagull)

grouse For the widom to learn about people's tribal rituals and ceremonies and the harmonizing effects they have on the spirit.
hawk Greatest flyer, carries our prayers to the Great Spirit.  for perspective, and clarity on inner visions.
hippopotamus At home in water an on land.  For the development of psychic intuition while staying grounded and practical.
Horse For strength, inner power and the power of grace.  Can live in the wild if set free.  For freedom in spirit and to get in touch with our own wilderness. **Strongest of all living clans**
hummingbird Passion, luck, energy, romantic love
jaguar For the power to hunt throught the deep waters of the subconscious.  
kangaroo For the courage to go forward when feeling weak.
leopard Hunts at night.  For understanding the subconscious mind, especially the shadowy aspects.
Lion Larger, stronger and more powerful than any other of the cat clans.  For strength, prosperity, good luck, courage, cooperation, health and nobility.
lizard For regeneration, renewal, and transformation (like it's tail)
lynx For getting in touch with that which is elusive and hard to get a hold of.  The Lynx is a secretive, wild cat.
manatee For serenity, gentleness, trust
meercat Only mammal with no heirarchy.  Used for freedom from authority.
moose Largest of the deer clan.  For power and confidence.
Mountain Lion Solitary, silent survives harshes environment.  For ability to keep silent when necessary.  Most successful, prolific and varied of all animal clans.
mouse For success, alertness, and versatility.
opossum Peacefully watches the world while hanging upside down by his tail.  For creative perception.
otter Quick, efficent meeting of food requirements.  for efficiency and playfulness.
owl For occult abilities, dreamtime visions, acceptance of the dark, the night, the shadow within and without.
peacock Psychic protection, courage, luck, rain, serenity.
penguin Live in large groups but maintain monogamy.  Invoke for loyalty in romantic love.
(wild) Pig Very communicative small tribes (clans) in forests.  For expressiveness, intelligence.
porcupine For the ability to defend oneself uniquily, inspiration to reach the heights.
prairie dog Lives in towns with tunnerls of up to 160 m².  to deal with the pressures of urban living.
rabbit and hare Breed rapidly.  Are numerous and successful while living amongst it's enemies.  for alertness, abundance, success and prosperity.
raccoon Insatiable curiosity.  Invoked for humore, playfulness, ability to skillfully inquire and scrutinize and how to love even the stinkiest garbage life throws at you.
raven **Trickster**  For far seeing prophecy, clairvoyant vision and strong magical powers.
roadrunner Ability to survive harsh environments.
robin Invoked for prayer, hope and healing.
salmon Fights it's way upstream to spawn where it had been born, lays it's eggs and passes on.  Invoked for the power to overcome obstacles, take on difficult challenges and to find the root of a problem.
seahorse Invoked for fluid, non- stereotypical abilities.  The female lays her eggs in the pouch of the male and he carries them through the gestation.
skunk Has the most effective defense, doesn't cause any harm that's permanent, and makes it's point clear.  For creative respect and defense, and either understanding or communicating the point.
snake Invoked for regeneration, transformation, wisdom, wholeness, good fortune and rain.
sparrow This bird tends to weave unusual things into it's nest.  Invoked for the courage to walk one's own path.
spider For creativity, originality, and manifesting the magical power of interweaving our dreams and reality.
squirrel Invoked for the ability to store up "for the winter", playfulness, and joy.
``swan Swans are strictly monogamous birds and mate for life.  Invoke for loyal affectionate love, grace, intuitive powers, faith, and commitment.
tiger Invoke for the ability to seize opportunities and perfect timing, as the tiger is known for it's ability to approach prey slowly and pounce at the right time.
turtle and tortoise Protection, patience, longevity, wisdom, nurturing, and compassion.
weasel Hunts under deep snow with cunning, stealty, and great fierceness.  For fearlessness and occult powers.
whale Intelligence, power, wisdom, and the ability to sing your own song and express your own individuality.
wolf Preys upon the old and sick.  Invoked, it helps us to eliminate our own weaknesses and non- productive thought forms that weaken our spirit.
woodpecker For rain, regeneration, and cleansing.  Native Americans link his drum- like peck with thunder spirits.
