To start Runecrafting you will need to complete the Rune Mysteries' quest. This is started when you speak to the Duke of Lumbridge and a guide can be found under the Quests section.

Talismans

To make any rune firstly you will need a Talisman. For instance; if you want to make Mind Runes you will need to find (or buy) a mind talisman from an NPC or another player.

Crafting Runes Rune Essence ( )

After you complete the Rune Mysteries Quest you will find that Aubury (Varrock Rune Seller) will teleport you to the source of the rune essence, where you are free to mine it. Please note however that the rune essence will not stack, unlike the runes themselves.

Just click once on a Rune Essence rock and you will automatically mine until your inventory is full.

To go back to Varrock enter one of the portals nearby the Rune Essence rocks.

Crafting Runes Altars

When you have collected enough Rune Essence you will need to turn them into Runes. To do this you need to go to the appropriate altar of the rune you want to make, e.g. to make Air runes go to the Air Altar.

To enter the ruins you will need the correct Talisman for each altar, an air altar requires an air talisman and a water altar requires a water talisman.

Use the Talisman with the centre of the ruins to be teleported to the Rune-Crafting Altar. Without the talisman there is no way of getting to the Rune-Crafting Altar.

At the Rune-crafting Altar simply left click on it and select Craft runes to craft all of the Rune Essence held in your inventory into runes (after they have been crafted the runes will stack).
