This is the beginning. Many storylines have already begun it
seems and it's almost like you wish there
was an episode before this, because you seem to jump right into the middle
of some of the stories. If you continue to watch, however, things
begin to smooth out and make sense.
The Football Player's big Game
Winslow
High has an academic policy stating that any student participating in
sports who fails two or more classes is placed on academic probation and suspended from participation in after-school activities.
Knowing this, Lauren fails one of the star football team members (Jason
Harrelson) thereby removing him from the list of eligible players for the upcoming
big game. This makes
the student and his parents very irate because college scouts will be
attending that game to look him over, and his not playing puts his chances at
receiving a scholarship in jeopardy.
Harrelson's parents decide to sue the school in an attempt to circumvent the
policy and allow him to play. Coach Riley attempts to get Lauren to change grades, but she refuses.
The lawyers later meet with Lauren, Guber and Harper. Harper and Guber
fight for school policy and Lauren remains quiet, not sure what to say. In an attempt to undermine the
system, the lawyer then brings
up a quote made by Principal Harper during a board meeting about the school
grading system being "archaic."
Harper unwaveringly sticks to school policy and leaves the
meeting. He later approaches the coach as being the only person who would
have been able to leak that quote to the lawyer. Coach Riley admits
he thought it was a shot at getting the player back on the
field. Harper is furious about the Coach breaking the trust of his
fellow educators by leaking information from a closed meeting.
Student
Dana Poole privately approaches Harry
Senate, the other teacher currently failing Jason, about the football player's
problem and threatens to tell about
their little "secret" (see epi 2 for
more) if Harry doesn't change the grade to
passing. Meanwhile Jason makes a case in his own defense and asks Lauren to give him a passing grade but she still refuses. Mr.
Harrelson then comes in and pleads with Lauren to change the grade but she
continues to refuse. Harry finally ups Harrelson's grade to a "D" so he
can play, (because of Dana Poole's secret? Maybe), and Winslow High wins
by a point.
Lipschultz is a little Erratic
Harvey Lipschultz tries to send
Dana Poole home because she refuses to wear a bra. Lauren and Harper
tell him he can't do that regardless of whether he thinks it's
vulgar. Harper calls Poole in and tells her that she has to wear one as part of
school dress code. Harvey's problems continue as he teaches his class that Jefferson and
Madison were 'midgets.' An African American student speaks out about the founding
fathers having slaves and that the history books don't teach about those
things. Lipschultz jumps all over him asking him if
plans to return his book at the end of the year as "used"
or "brand new". Lauren questions Harvey's actions and
warns him not to continue with the derogatory remarks about students or
historical leaders.
The Beginning of Anthony Ward's Problems
Principal Harper finds student
Anthony Ward locked in a locker wearing a diaper. Anthony refuses to
tell him who was responsible for doing it. Coach Riley
later finds Malcolm White roughing up Anthony in the hall and gives the
bully a warning, while Anthony just takes off saying that everything's okay. The Coach
threatens to tell Harper about the incident. Guber speaks with
White, who has trouble looking the administrator in the eyes, so Guber forces him into a
staring match. Harper makes a trip to the hospital after hearing from secretary Louisa that Anthony
Ward is there. He is
getting stitches but still refuses to name his attacker. Somehow
Harper finds out because he finds Malcolm White and slams him into the
lockers. He threatens, "If
Anthony Ward gets so much as a hangnail, I will take...your
head...off!".
Down in the Dungeon
Guber finds the basement
classroom, "The Dungeon", unoccupied by teacher Marla
Hendricks. When asking a student where she is the student says she
thinks she's dead, and points to the black board which reads
"Gone to kill myself, hope you're happy." Harry Senate,
after much reluctance and trepidation finally agrees to go to the
dungeon. (not much choice really since Guber required him to).
Harper finds Marla, but she is mentally quite unstable and refuses to
listen and walks out. Harry is extremely unhappy about
being sent to the "Dungeon", knowing that the students are incorrigible,
so he wears a gun to class. When he takes off his jacket and they
see the gun they immediately settle down. He gives a long speech
about guns and has the class chant "gun" over and over until he
fires three blanks. The class hides under their desks and he tells
them to stay there until they're told to come out. Parents fill the
office after hearing about the incident and Harper assures them that Harry
will be dealt with. Guber is given the choice to fire him but does
not. Harper warns Harry that there won't be a next time.
Harper meets with Marla later and puts her on leave until she can get help
and stay on her depression medication.
Holt 45
Student Sheryl Holt has a web
site which depicts scenes, in a cartoon likeness, of things that happen at
Winslow High. She first shows English teacher Milton Buttle being
shot out of a horse's behind. This is brought to Harper's attention,
but nothing is done. Sheryl then alerts English teacher Marilyn
Sudor that she's first in the website poll of who the male students most
want to sleep with. Lauren finished seventh. Holt then
portrays Principal Harper as a gorilla slamming Malcolm White into the
lockers. Finally, her site shows Lauren vomiting on vice principal
Guber after he asked her out on a date with a caption that states
Lauren accepted only because she was caught off guard. Guber sees
the site and fakes a cold to cancel the date because he thinks it may be
true.
