Coach's main running back is being denied the chance to play in the
"big" game because of two failing courses. The
player and parent pleads with teachers to change grades. Coach
even asks Lauren to change his grade so he can play but she
won't. The parents sue the school and the lawyer meets with
the principal. Coach Riley lets information slip to the lawyer
which may undermine the school's authority. Harper is
indignant about it and lets into the coach. Eventually Harry,
(other failing teacher), gives the student a passing grade and the
team ends up winning. |
Kevin learns that Harry has kissed Dana Poole. That's about it
for him for this epi. |
Coach's football team refuses to shower with a player who they think
is gay. The coach doesn't know what to do because forcing them
to shower could end up in a harassment suit, and not allowing him
to shower could end up in a discrimination suit. He finds a
player beating up the accused gay player and separates them.
He questions the accused player who refutes the claims and doesn't
want the rumor to spread because it would hurt his chances of
getting into a Jesuit college, B.C.. |
Kevin is the student government advisor and he holds student
speeches for the election of student body president. |
Kevin gets roped into
searching the building for the armed student/suspect because he
knows the building better than the police do. As he is
searching, he and an officer find Milton and Lisa in a basement
room gettin' a little freaky if you know what I'm sayin'.
He flips out and spends the rest of the episode trying to tell
Milton how stupid this is. Milton pleads with Kevin not to
tell. Kevin, being his friend decides not to but tries his
hardest to talk some sense into Milton. We'll find out if it
worked in the next epi. |
Kevin is asked by Harper about the Holt website portraying Milton
and Lisa and being intimate. Kevin claims to know nothing
about it. (he lies).
In other affairs Kevin finds a student
in the hall beaten up, but student won't admit to who did it.
Kevin discovers it was a girl, Christine. He recruits
Christine for the wrestling team, and after much encouragement she
agrees. Father approaches Kevin about the subject, concerned
that it won't be good for her and that she may be ridiculed even
more for her size. He allays his fears and Christine attends
practice and shows her stuff. She is awarded a spot on the
team and wins her first match, with her father in the audience. |
Kevin sees Milton and Lisa talking in the hallway and asks Milton if
he is still seeing Lisa. He is shocked to hear that they are
still a couple and tells hi that he HAS TO end the relationship.
Kevin is discussing with Milton later
the merits of dating an African-American woman. Marilyn
overhears a hypothetical discussion and tells Marla that Kevin wants
to date her. Thing is, Kevin really wants to ask out
Marilyn. Kevin asks Marilyn out and she is surprised because
she thought Marla was the object of discussion. Marla comes in
all dressed up for Kevin and Marilyn tells her the truth.
Marla is saddened, but gets over it. Marilyn agrees to go on a
date with him after Marla is truly over the embarrassment. |
Kevin hears that Christine
wants to quit the wrestling team. He tries several times to
get her to stay, telling her that she made a commitment. What
he really wants is to beat Belmont in the next big match.
Lauren tries to help out with the situation, but he tells her to
stay out of it. In the end, Harper encourages Christine and
she shows up and wins. She does, however, take the mike after
the match and tell everyone to stop calling her the blob.
In other areas, Milton is in serious trouble and about to be
caught in his affair. He asks Kevin to continue to lie which
he stupidly does. Harper can tell he's lying and when it all
comes out in the open Guber flat out fires him for lying. Next
episode should be quite interesting. |
Kevin is obviously embroiled in the firing situation. He asks
"The Practice" lawyer Ellenor Frutt, a long-time friend,
to be his lawyer and try to get his job back. She takes the
job and the preliminary hearing with the school proves to be
fruitless and they go to court. Harper and Guber are visibly
angry with him. Kevin tells Ellenor that he doesn't mind
diggin up some dirt on other staff members, especially Guber.
He wants to "take Guber down!"
The court sessions are tense and you can
see there is no love lost between him and Guber and Harper.
When he takes the stand he admits to lying about his knowledge of
the affair, but claims that his loyalty to a friend has to count for
something. During the recess, while the judge is deliberating,
Kevin speaks quite forcefully with Steven and tells him he is no
longer considered a friend and that he feels like he has been
stabbed in the back by a friend. Steven walks off as Kevin
gets verbally abusive. the judge rules in favor of the school
and Kevin has to clean out his belongings. A long goodbye
ensues as the staff hugs him and Milton in the lobby of the
school. From the office window Guber and Harper are obviously
depressed about losing two friends and good teachers this way. |

Our
Thoughts on Coach Riley: |
Tim's
thoughts:
Coach Riley is a typical sports
coach. He wants to win and does what it takes to get the
win. I don't think he sees eye to eye with the principal
and his "academics first" attitude. The coach
is a primary player when it comes to student athletes, but his
influence is overshadowed by the teachers and principal.
I don't necessarily agree with the
portrayal of the coach. I coach sports in school and
work very closely with teachers to make sure that academics
are the first priority.
|
Jen's
Thoughts:
I like Coach, but I want to know more about his
function in the school. Does he only coach sports, or
does he also teach a full load of classes? I do have to
say that I loved the way he handled the Christine Banks
situation. What a wonderful way to help this girl to
gain some respect, self and otherwise. I am
very curious to see where this Marilyn/Kevin idea is going,
but as I said earlier I always thought he and Louisa seemed
like they would enjoy each other's company more. |
