This is not the official
website for the show, and no, we're not professional webmasters.
We're just a couple
of parents/educators who love the show and decided to post a tribute
to it online. We update it as often as we can, but there are
several reasons why it doesn't get as much attention as we'd like to
give it; the two most important of those being:
Brandon
Keith
Ian
Kenneth
As far as the making of the website,
since we aren't official we don't have the luxury of having the
episode in our hands prior to actual airtime, thus the reason for the
delay between when you view the show and when you can see the latest
version of our website.
We stay up half the night nearly every Monday to work on
our updates. We tape the show when it airs, and while Tim makes notes for the episode guides I try to convince our 3 year old to go to bed. When the show is over, Tim starts typing up his synopsis on the laptop while I juggle between making video captures and audio clips from the tape on my desktop computer, coaxing our one yr old to eat a bedtime snack, and visiting our 3 year old 6 or 7 times to tell him to go to sleep already.
Then, when the vidcaps and wavs are ready, we burn them into a CD and load them onto the laptop where Tim dumps them into our
FrontPage web authoring program. He then links up wav files to phrases in the episode review and also drops in a few snapshots that show key plot points. When it's all ready, we upload it to
our URL for your viewing pleasure.
The pictures and wavs we
upload to our site are the best we could get from that episode, so no,
there are no more to be had. Getting the wavs and pics takes a fair
amount of work, but is also rather enjoyable. If you would ever care
to try it for yourself you'll need a video capture card in your computer
(this is just a PCI card with a VCR connector that sticks out the back of
your tower,) a VCR and accompanying cables, video capture/editing software
such as WinTv 2000 or RealProducer, and audio editing software such as
Sound Recorder (PC users have this as part of Windows.) The VCR
hooks up to the computer just as it would to another VCR if you were
planning on copying a tape. You open the video software, view the
show just as if you are watching TV, make a few snapshots with a click of
a button, and record sound clips just as if you were using a tape deck. So
you see, the technical aspects are really quite simple. It's the
artistic bit of snapping exactly the right frame, recording exactly
the right quote that makes things difficult. Anyone with an even
slightly artistic temperament will find themselves hunched over
their computers for hours trying to create perfection. :^)
We receive far too many
requests for copies of the show to be able to field them all. The
best we can do for you is provide some pictures, audio clips, and a
synopsis of the episode you'd like recapped. You'll find the links
for each episode guide on the front
page of our site. If you are desperate to see the actual show
and feel that just reading the reviews would just spoil the fun for you,
you might try posting a request for a copy of a tape of the episode you
missed to the various Boston Public bulletin boards. (You'll find a list
of these on the other FAQ answer sheet.) Failing that, I can promise
you this: There are three things guaranteed in life: Death,
Taxes, and Summer Reruns! :^)
While I feel confident that
given the time and resources Tim could very well make his own little
version of Holt45, it just would be far too much work for one person to
attempt to do. (Sheryl Holt herself said she had in the vicinity of 90
people working for her on her website, so I can't imagine Tim being able
to manage it on his own with the very small amount of free time that he
has.) Also, there is already a real deal Holt45
out there, so we'd hate to rehash what's already been done. :^)
Fanfiction is a wonderful
thing, but unfortunately Tim and I don't have the time to either write any
ourselves or review pieces written by others and submitted to us for
publication on our site. Fortunately for fans of fanfic, there are
at least two terrific repositories out there: the Winslow
High Library and Scribbles.
(also for Harry/Lauren shippers, there's a selection of stories here.)
