Coal Research Activities
and Coal Combustion Facility

Coal Research Activities

  • Coal has currently been receiving widespread attention as it is specifically mentioned in the government energy policy that is to sustitute fuels derived from oil driving turbine generators in the future electrical power plants around the country to meet the national demand of energy.
  • In the with that policy, BPPT has established a coal research center in UPT-LSDE at Serpong with
objectives :
  • To provide research, development and demonstration in the utilization of biomass and coal in Indonesia
  • To provide consulting service and to make its research and Development capabilities available to industries and private sectors in the use of biomass and coal as fuel and related technology
  • To develop an experimental methodology fro characterization of Indonesian coals
  • To compare combustion performance of different rank of Indonesian coals
  • To develop Indonesian Coal Database.
Coal Combustion Facility
  • Although basic coal properties can be quite accurately measured on the bench scale in the Laboratory, many on the conditions areunrealistic because in the real industrial flames it is usually very difficult to relate combustion behavior to basic coal properties.
  • To approach this problem the coal combuation characteristics areobtained from test simulation furnace with proper instrumentation.
  • The information is then used to provide a link between standart fuel parameters and full-scale plant behavior.
The test furnace that are available to obtain coal combustion data are :
  • One-Dimentional Furnace (ID Furnace)
  • Boiler Simulator Furnace
  • Tunnel or Cement Kiln Simulator Furnace

The operation of these furnace are controlled using asophisticated distributed control system (DCS), Rosemount System.
This system allows full remote operation of the furnace to be done from two command consoles located in a control room.
One console operates the One-Dimentional Furnace while the other operates both boiler and tunnel furnaces.
Besides accommodating the command consoles, the control room also houses the gas analyzers, i.e. for measurments of O2, CO2, CO, NO, NOx, SO2 concentrations in the exhaust gas, FSS (Flame Supervisory Safety) system and several PCs.
The PCs are linked to Rosemount System, DCS, and used for data acquisition, management, analysis and rporting.
In a single test around 90 parameters are fed into the Rosemont System.
All these parameters can be continuously monitored and recorded on, line on the operator consoles including flow rates, temperature, pressures, ect.
