The Bastille was a debtor prison that represented the harshness of feudal life to the French peasants. Many of the people held were in jail for money they owed.

The Fall of the Bastille, on July 14, 1789, symbolized the widespread feeling against the government and the monarchy. This event is often considered the start of the French Revolution.
