The Committee of Public Safety, an executive body in France, was created by the National Convention in 1793 during the Reign of Terror.

Robespierre had many executed if they went or said anything critical of the revolutionary goverment. The Terror was designed to fight enemies of the revolution and most of the people sent to the guillotine were not aristocrats but ordinary people.

Robespierre was the mastermind of the Reign of Terror and also the leader of the Committee of Public Safety. He was the most powerful man in France. Supporters of Robeespierre felt that the Terror must be stopped while he thought it should continue. The other members of the Committee of Public Safety felt the same and Robespierre was arrested and set to the guillotine, he was the last victim of the Reign of Terror.

The ending of Robespierre was a relief to many ordinary people for many thought that the Reign of Terror he had set had gone on too long and should be stopped. People had grown tired of the instability and bloodshed of the revolution by now and were ready for something else.
