So you think farming consists of pigs, cows, and chickens happily grazing in green fields? WRONG!! Within
the last 50 years, many small farms have been taken over by corporate companies who are interested only in money and care
nothing about the way animals are treated. For example, The Greyhound Bus Company owns a company like this. WTF???
What are Factory Farms??
These farms are called Factory Farms because they treat their animals like machines. They will do anything just
to make more money.
Example: Research has shown that chickens and laying hens are less stressed out in the dark. So what did the ignorant
'farmers' do?? They confined the chickens/hens and kept them in total darkness ALL THE TIME. The only time they would
see light would be at feeding time and when they are taken to be slaughtered.
Chickens
'Poultry', as chickens are called amount for the greatest numbers of animals raised in factory farms. Almost 8
million chickens are killed each year. They are born into lives of misery, confined in darkness among thousands of other
chickens. Some suffocate from overcrowding, others die of stress. Broiler chickens (bred
to eat) are given hormones to gain as much weight as possible in the shortest amount of time. They are slaughtered
after 7 wks, when the normal lifespan of a chicken should be at least 7 years!!
The living conditions are filthy. Their feces is never cleaned. The air is so unsanitary that they workers of the
farm are told to spend as little time in there as possible.
Laying Hens
These hens are bred to lay eggs. They live for about 1 year in the same disgusting conditions as broiler chickens.
In a WSPA magazine I read, it said that often, seven chickens will be kept in an area of the size of a microwave.
When the hens stop producing eggs, they are killed.
So What happens to the male chickens born on egg farms? They get thrown into a garbage bag, to die with other
male chickens. Another way they are killed are by grinding them up alive. What did they do wrong? They were
born the wrong sex. 200 million of them are killed each year.
