Hardware
Quake 3 Arena is so demanding of your concentration to be
capable of beating the bots, that I suggest you spend a small
portion of the day playing it and then after completion of
a level go on to other things. Don't expect to fly through
the game at the higher difficulty levels. If your like me,
you probably wont find the bots fun to play with, so I suggest
setting the difficulty level to the highest setting that you
are capable of playing and still pass the Introduction level.
I have a P2-350 with 128MB and 8MB Voodoo2, with a 4MB AGP
card. If you own a system that is anything less then this
then I would suggest waiting up on buying Q3. Its not playable
on an enjoyment level with anything less. And even then I
still have some problems with Bot lag, since my computer seems
to be maxed out when playing the game.
About the Quake bots
Well first off, you will know they are bots because they never
miss, almost always are where you don't want them to be, and
generally will ignore you if you find a place to hide. Killing
off the other bots and finishing the match without you. So
because of this you have to realize that one on one you cannot
win. You are incapable of the accuracy and unrelenting dedication
to killing the bots that it takes for you to get enough frags
to beat them. Once you come to terms with this you can then
begin to think how you can use the item placement and level
itself to aid you in winning. Think about narrow passages
with a plasma gun and high ground advantage points with the
Rocket Launcher(RL). Know that a bot with no armor is much
easier to kill then one who has plenty to harden its shell.
Also realize that no matter how much health and armor you
acquire, the bot will still kill you with a machine gun. You
have to use strafe jumping, dodge-jumping and fleeing tactics
if you are to keep alive long enough to kill them.
Opportunity frags
When you let another entity do all the damage to the player/bot
and you get the finishing blow to be awarded the frag. These
are the frags that will give you that extra push in score
to allow you to win. If you do not get enough of these then
you can expect to loose the match. Since you are not only
denying them the frag points you are also
Analysis
Overall the special effects and AI of UT seemed much more
fun, the game has a polished feel to it that Quake 3 just
cant compare to. So if that is what you were looking for then
I would suggest buying that. However there is nothing to compare
with the speed and rush that Quake gives you, and if you want
that kind of online experience, fostered from playing previous
versions, then obtaining Q3 is a must.
Introduction
The following document is a guide to beating Quake 3 Arena
on the hardcore level setting. I currently have not beaten
the Introduction on Nightmare so I didn't bother with that
level setting. Besides it seemed too cheap to keep my interest
long enough to be worth it. When reading the tutorial, note
that I will point out "sweet" spots in the levels
and possible tactics that will enable you to win the match.
Though you will need a great deal of skill to complete most
of the levels some times there are tricks or paths that will
allow you to win much easier if you exploit them. Not only
will I attempt to show you how to use these I will also discuss
fundamental strategies that will hold true for other levels
to come. You will most benefit from reading this if you take
what I have to say as suggestions and improvise what you learn
to best fit your own style of playing.
