The Guardians of the Galaxy.
It was the 70s, and I would regularly go to Bookberry in Ayer to buy books, comics and magazines. On one of these occasions I purchased a large format black and white magazine, Marvel Preview #11. This book featured a space-age character called Star-Lord. The thing that attracted me to the book at the time was the John Bryne artwork. Now this was not the first appearance of the character, it was the second. What I loved about the book was the science fiction elements mixed with Marvel Super-heroics.
Now never in a million years did I ever think that this character would gain wide popularity or be featured in a big budget summer movie, and for nearly 40 years I was correct.
Now let me add that the modern Star-Lord is a very different character than the one from my youth. The modern day version has more in common with Han Solo than Superman, which is just fine with me.
I really did not know what to expect from Guardians of the Galaxy, I was somewhat familiar with all the players in the film but was not sure how this with adapt to the screen. Well, it just blew my socks off, what a fabulous film. The best adjective I can use to express my approval with this film it would be “fun”. The film has plenty of action and special effects but most importantly it light hearted and never takes itself too seriously. All the characters wonderful done and are recognizable arc types but also fresh and different.
One of the better things about the film is its soundtrack. It utilizes song from the 60s to the 80s that fit perfectly to the film as well as being important to the history of Star-Lord.
Although I have not seen many films this year, this is the best one that I have seen so far. I think almost anyone would enjoy it regardless if they are a comic fan or not.
