The Mag series was developed by Neil Mackellow for Penn. Its main spool control is by rare magnet located in the reel housing. The bearing housed on each end of the spool rotates on a fixed stainless steel spindle just like the Abu's UltraCast reels. These system allows spool's weight to be reduced therefore helping users to gain more casting distance with lesser effort. The drag of the Mags as usual is made up of multi disc HT100 material, the material that is used to brake supersonic aircraft. Think of what it can do to a fish. This reel is gaining popularity in the casting field but it is also being used widely for fishing. The Knobby and the Sliddy shares the same specifications, but tournament users prefers the Knobby due to the fact that its easier to adjust the magnet setting halfway through a cast. For fishing, I would personally prefer the Slidy because it has a built-in rachet. The Mag is uncommon locally because it is still quite new. Also not alot of tackle shop is selling it and the price is relatively high. Reckon as a distance reel, I think its good to use it off the beach but since line capacity is quite high, I think it can still manage a little of the rougher ground around Marina South side. Yes, its the reel to choose if you own the Penn's PPT surf rods. |

This another proven lever drag reel of Bedok Jetty, numerous fish had already been conquered by this particular reel from Penn. The GLS 25 is housed in a graphite frame which is both easy to maintain and strongh. The drag is the proven HT 100, the fish stopping material of Penn. Although there is no cast control feature on the reel, I find it rather easy to cast as compared to the Shimano TLD15. Although the GLS25 is not classified as a surfcasting reel, relatively long casting distance could still be obtained when coupled to a suitable rod such as the Penn Slamer ( see rods by Penn ). Load the reel with 30lb line and there will not be much fish around Bedok Jetty which the reel could not handle. Buy one for use at the Bedok Jetty. |
