Entry 03: December 9, 2002 : Art Between 1850-1930

Realism

Realsim during the years 1850-1880 was a trend that made an attempt to make art as real as possible. Tse artist didn't try to embellish their art with exagerate shapes and colors. Instead they paid close attention to the little details of each of their models and tried to capture what was present. During this time artist in favor of realism painted many portraits of the ordinary. They attempted to portray the lives, appearances, problems, customs of the lower and middle class of society. This was a time that artist attempted to explore the darkend cornors of the average life. Not the life of the famous and rich.

Manet, Édouard (Vase of flowers) Manet, Édouard (A Bar at the Folies-Bergere, 1882 ) John George Brown (Crossing the Brook, 1874)

When looking at these paintings, you can instantly see the details and complexity of the artwork. The way the colors are put on the canvas and and the choices of models. In each of the pictures I can't help but just relate to them. I feel a longing to want be apart of the picture or experience the event at which it was painted. The painting of the woman and the bar by Manet makes me imagine the excitement, the possible rowdiness and the way life was full of simple pressures not restricted to the extent of high class rules.
