Entry 07: January 13, 2002 : 20th Century Art
Fauvism (1898-1908) During the early 20th Century, Fauvism entered the world of art. It started in France and shocked many people at first. The bold and the violent array of colors astounded many people. At the time impressionist were abundant and mainly used soft shimmering tones. When Fauvism was introduced it was different and it definitely stood out among the softer looking paintings. Using the bold colors and violent combinations, it dispalyed a different facet of art and opened the mind to outrageous visions. ![]() ![]() Both paintings are very beautiful and when they incorported bold colors it conveys a different meaning to the viewer. An example would be "Big Ben" by Derain, Andre. In his painting of Big Ben in London, he uses a blend of cool and hot colors that makes you wonder why he would uses these colors in certain places adn not others. An exampl e would be when he uses a dark blue with tints of light blue in the sky but fades into a light green for the night sky. The buildings are dark and clearly it screams night! However, when you look at the moon, it's a bright yellow with a red orange rim. Why is that? Why would he make the moon stand out as if it were the sun itself. Using certain colors, a certain way allows the artist to expand his or her ability to express emotion. In the painting "Big Ben", it just shouts excitement, beauty and allure. It draws me to it and makes me think that fireworks are bursting in the sky as if there was a huge festival and he was experiencing it from afar still feeling the excitement in the air. |
