Research for Fall 2002, Spring 2003 at TTU
Dates: August 2002 to May 2003

For partial fulfillment of my Bachlor's degree in Psychology, I worked on a senior thesis studying the formal elements of explanatory elaboration, which analyzed how effective explanations are constructed. A manuscript draft for publication can be found here.

Research for Spring 2002 at TTU
Dates: January 2002 to March 2002

This work was conducted for my PSY-311 Experimental Psychology class. The study was on metaphor and examined a phenomenon I refer to as Semantic Import, how elements connected by metaphor are semantically extended into eachother. A manuscript draft of this research can be found here.

Dates: June 2001 to Auguest 2001

I love prairie dogs. This summer, I spent most of my time in the lab analyzing the data we collected last summer and perfected my methodology. The results: two, count 'em, two papers ready for publication. The first examines the past data and gives a Vocal Library of prairie dog alarm calls and the values for the measured variables. The second applies calculus to examine the slope and curvature of the alarm calls. The variables this analysis generates create important loci which are used in the communication process.

State Trust burrowLabortory (The Inner Santium)My Summer 2000 has been spent recording the alarm calls of prairie dogs and studying their behavior towards predators. A basic week involved about 20 hours of lab work and 20 hours of field work. Lab work involves compiling previously acuminated data on the different prairie dog colonies anywhere from 1988 to 1993, depending on the colony. This data includes age, sex, weight, trapped location, and escape position (I've become *very* familar with the number pad...). Field work normally involves about 4-7 hours of which at least 3 are used to actually record data. The morning times are from about 6am to 10am, and evening times are 2pm to 6pm. My lab partner and I sit on the out skirts of the colony and watch for perdators while recording alarm calls. The last two weeks of research were spent analysing our collected data and correlating it with various predators and behaviors.
