This is one of my all time favorite books! The book is set in 1930's Russia. The book was so controversial that it was not published in the authors life time. It was published in the 1960's severely censored. The book starts out with Satan coming to Russia because the Russia people do not believe in God, and therefore do not believe in him. Satan is accompanied by a motley crew, Korovyov, who looks and dresses like a circus clown, Azazello who has blazing red hair and is a very shrewd minion who is not to be taken lightly, and Behemoth a Huge Talking Black Cat who has a fondness for Vodka, Cheese, Cigars, and a Primus Stove. Someone loose their head, another is driven to schizophrenia, there's evil things happening in apartment 50 in the 60 story building on Sadovaya street, Moscow is seemingly haunted, and yet in the end Pontius Pilate finally finds peace! This book is very humors, and yet has incredible philosophical depth. It had me rolling on the floor at times! In the end all turns out well for everyone...well almost everyone that is!
