This book is fun and yet heart wrenching at times. The book starts out with Owen as a boy. Owen doesn't have any really close friends and yet no one can seem to resist him and they even feel the need to touch him constantly. Owen is certain he is the next Savior, but I won't tell you why, but I will say that Owen has a internal Voice that does find it's expression externally in Owens's life. Owen is very comical, and very self possessed, and sometimes he can be outright mean in a self righteous way, human like all of us. He does eventually make a close and long time friend who's name is John. Although John is wiser than Owen  in a temporal way he has much to learn from Owen. Owen falls in love with John's mother in a very innocent way, and then has the misfortune of killing her with a foul ball during a little league game, as a matter of fact it was the only ball Owen Meany ever hit! We get to watch Owen, John and the rest grow up find their way in life, and Owen not surprisingly is our hero in the end.
