Yuri Bashmet was born on the 24. 1. 1953 in Rostov on Don, the son of an engineer and a linguist. His first teacher, in Lvov, was Zoya Zertsalova. In 1971 he entered the Moscow Conservatory, where he was a pupil of Prof. Boriskovsky and Prof. Druzhinin, and where he later had the distincition of being the youngest musician ever to be appointed to a professorship. The encouragement given him by his mother has been an important influence on his development as a musician. |
Yuri Bashmets concert
career has taken him throughout Europe, Japan, the United States and Australia. He has
appeared with many distinguished orchestras such as the London Symphony, the Leningrad
Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, the Dresden Staatskapelle, the Symphonic-Orchester des
Bayerischen Rundfunks. He played in a number of major concert halls, including Milan's LA
SCALA, the Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, where he has been the first violist ever to give a
solo recital. More than 30 new works for the viola have been dedicated to him.
