The festival was born from the desire of the organisers to establish a yearly classical music event of international resonance in an enchanted locale: the
ISLAND OF ELBA.

To bring back the spirit of classical music festivals of the past. A festival, rather than simply being a continuation of the music season, can be an occasion to offer unexpected programs new or unjustlzy overlooked works, original ensembles to the public.

The inaugural season ran from the 4th to the 10th of october 1997, in the theater built on the request of Napoleon, in Portoferraio, the capital City of ELBA. The presence of YURI BASHMET and of his orchestra, "the Solists of Moscow", in residence during the festival, as well as the collaboration of ohter world-renowned artists provoked great public enthousiasm.

For the fourth season, which will run from the 5th to the 22nd of september 2000, the Festival will once again welcome many exceptional artists.

We chose the Island of Elba, Italy, as our new home for a number of reasons, said George Edelman. It is nestled between the coast of Tuscany and the island of Corsica, and attracts an average of five million tourists - German, Swiss and French - per summer season (May-October). Hundreds of hotels, elegant boutiques, world-renown dining, and a cultural landscape that features Roman ruins, medieval fortresses and relics from Napoleon's stay are just some of the attractions of this small isle.

The recently-restored Teatro dei Vigilanti, built on the request of Napoleon, is the elegant setting for most of the concerts.
