More drama for Hollander!

hollander_1.jpg

"The Guardian" guru David Hollander is back in development mode, setting up drama projects at ABC and Fox via an overall deal at Sony Pictures Television.

For his Fox project, Hollander is sticking close to the legal themes he explored in "The Guardian." Untitled script will be set at a fictional law school/legal clinic in the Los Angeles area, with the focus on the intersecting lives of professors and students as they rep high-need, low-income clients.

For ABC, Hollander is developing the hourlong drama "Three Rivers," which will focus on a female crime journo who works for her dad's Pittsburgh newspaper and recently divorced her police detective husband.

A fun surfing competition pitting a team  of actors against a lineup of high-profile musicians, it was won by the actors, who were led by Dean Cain, a former TV "Superman", and Australian Simon Baker, star of the hit TV series"The Guardian" and the soon to be released movie "The Ring 2 ".

News for Emilio Esvetez!

emilioestevez_240_001.jpg

He was the director of 307 "Hazel Park",314"All Is Mended" and 317"The Watchers".

ABC had given a put pilot commitment to "Long Island Sound," a family comedy from "Mad About You" co-creator Danny Jacobson and "Repo Man" star Emilio Estevez. According to The Hollywood Reporter, several networks were circling the Estevez vehicle and there's a substantial penalty attached to ABC's pilot commitment.

Estevez, largely out of the public eye in recent years, has appeared in films from "The Outsiders" to "The Breakfast Club" to "Might Ducks" to "Freejack." Last season he directed for CBS' "The Guardian."

DH gets new deal from ABC!

hollander_1.jpg

David Hollander, who created CBS's now-canceled Pittsburgh-set drama series "The Guardian," has sealed a deal to create the pilot episode of a new drama for ABC.

Hollander's new program, which ABC will decide whether to pick up as a series next May, is a crime drama he intends to set in Pittsburgh.

"I think there's a lot of opportunity to succeed at ABC. I think this particular show is well-suited for ABC, which does not have a preponderance of crime dramas on the air. And I think ABC is prepared to support a vision that is both procedural and character." Said Hollander.

-Bunny Buddy
-Nick's Briefcase (Lamborghini) with his portfolio with his writing in it and the final script still tucked inside with his notes. ***Also, we found a couple of Simon's own personal effects inside, but that will have to be left to your imagination***
-Legal paperwork that refers back to episodes
-We will be getting a copy of all of the scripts from all three seasons.
-Three wallets with all contents including driver's licenses for Burton, Wendy and Jake.
-Business Cards for Burton, Nick and Jake (and Nick's leather business card holder)
-Fallin & Fallin Stationary
-Burton's many awards

This is a pretty good (and exciting) list for now.  We are also hoping to get some additional items, but as I said I am not listing the full inventory.  Also, invitations went out last week to all the cast and crew and we are really hoping that more will be able to attend.  Cross your fingers!

I hope you guy's find this as exciting as I did.

Last call on "The guardian"!

25.jpg

Folks, I've been happy to be your emissary for "The Guardian," but CBS CEO Leslie Moonves has officially tired of my questions. In a post-sweeps conference call Tuesday, Moonves was dismissive when I tried to ask about the decision to cancel the show. I'm afraid he's lost all patience with me and, by extension, with your concerns.

"It's over. I loved it. It wasn't catching fire," he said quickly and testily. "We had three great years in a great time period. Tell your Pittsburgh readers we're very sorry, we loved it and we're not against doing [another show] again [in Pittsburgh]."

When I tried to ask at what point he gave up on "The Guardian," Moonves said, "I don't know. It's always a process; we just decided in that time period we needed something new."

News about Rebecca Rigg!

becca.jpg

Q:I'm writing in regard to Nicole Kidman, who attended the Oscars recently with a lady friend from Australia. I hope I'm right; if I am, she's Rebecca Rigg, wife of TV's Simon Baker ("The Guardian").

-- L.C., Kenner

A:Because those Australians stick together, we're fairly certain that Rebecca Rigg accompanied Nicole Kidman to the Oscars ceremony. While researching your question, we found that the two often hang together. In fact, Kidman is god mother to one of Rigg's and Baker's children.

No Protection for Guardain!

The Guardian's Simon baker is not totally disappointed at the cancellation of the legal drama. He says My wife is still doing backflips at the thought of me not going back to 18-hour days after the summer and I'm really enjoying spending time with my three kids, he says. The Aussie hunky who is now filming the Ring 2, says his only complaint was not being told until after the season finale.

Good Morning Guardian Fans...
My name is Michael Ann and I work for KidsVoice.  My agency was the inspiration for The Guardian.  Our executive director, Scott Hollander, is the brother of David Hollander.

I wanted to be sure to keep all of you in the loop about an exciting event that we will hold in September to honor the legacy that The Guardian has left for the children of Pittsburgh.

Our event will be held on September 18th in Pittsburgh at our new convention center.  More details will follow, but one item I can announce is "Behind the Lens" a question and answer session with David Hollander and Alan Rosenberg

I will be sure to keep you posted on any new developments and hope that we will be able to have some of you come to show your support. The show may be gone, but the legacy lives on in the lives of of Pittsburgh's children.

TV Q&A with Rob Owen!

25.jpg

Thursday, May 27, 2004

Q: Well CBS did it again!!! They canceled a good show in "The Guardian" only to replace it with junk. I realize there is nothing the general public can do now to revive the show on CBS and that there is little chance of it resurfacing on another network, but I just wonder when the network execs will learn to recognize quality? If history is any indication ... probably never!!!

- Jon Taylor, Wexford

Jon, did CBS send you a tape of "Clubhouse," the show that's replacing "The Guardian"? No? Then how do you know it's junk?

I understand being disappointed when a favorite series is dropped, but let's try to be rational, folks. Read my Saturday column for a glimpse at some of the possible reasons for the show's cancellation.

Q: Many years ago, after ABC canceled "Taxi," NBC picked it up for its last two seasons. Now that CBS has ditched "The Guardian," which had respectable ratings overall, is there any chance that another network might pick it up?

- Richard Schultz, Tikva, Israel

Alas, no. I think within the TV business, "The Guardian" is looked at as damaged goods. It never got a critical buzz or awards, as "Taxi" did, so it won't find a benefactor in another network.

"It might be a great time to get back to movies for me, where my life was before and probably rests later, but I will miss this amazing connection to an audience on a weekly basis, should I do that,"David Hollander said. "It's been a privilege to write for so many people and have them experience the show. They've been vocal and consistent and it's truly been an honor." For a full report on event, click here.

You'd see things on "The Guardian" you wouldn't see on other network shows. The main character, Nick Fallin, and his father, Burton, had as many failings as strengths. The future of "The Guardian" is  in serious doubt, even though the third year drama is a frequent winner of the Tuesday 9 p.m. ET hour. While the series averages 10.4 million viewers a week (off from 11.8 million last season), its performance among young adults is weak enough to spell its doom. . New article from The Star-Ledger!

As TV's most-watched network, CBS doesn't have a lot of scheduling holes. "The Guardian" isn't doing badly, but it's at best a reliable singles hitter in a lineup that could use some more doubles and triples. But the current regime at CBS also has a better sense than any other network of how to program with variety. If the choice comes down to "The Guardian" or another cookie-cutter police procedural from the Jerry Bruckheimer factory, it might be nice to go with the one CBS drama that doesn't resemble any other show on television.  For a full report on event, click here.

New article from PPG!

nick_anne.jpg

The Guardian had its ups and downs, which will happen when a show runner takes the flying-by-the-seat-of-our-pants path to plotting as opposed to the plan-it-out-a-season-at-a-time approach. Characters were introduced and then disappeared without explanation, a frustrating exercise for loyal viewers. But just about every time I thought David Hollander had painted himself into an unsatisfying corner, he surprised me with an unexpected resolution, the kind that only comes out of allowing for natural spontaneity in the creative process. For anyone who watches copious amounts of television, surprise twists are the rarest of TV gifts. For a full report on event, click here.

New article from PPG!

20040421apguardian_450.jpg
The future of the show seems to be unsure with two new episodes remaining to be aired.

David Hollander speculates that, if renewed, "The Guardian" could draw in more viewers by becoming "a little less dark, a little less cold and _ Simon Baker will hate me for saying this _ but let's see him smile and laugh a couple more times."

He acknowledges it's difficult to make promises to change while campaigning on a show's track record.

Hollander won't even try.

"I couldn't promise anything I haven't already delivered. I've already given them 67 hours of television. They know what `The Guardian' is ... All I can really say is, 'Take me or leave me.'"

The March 9 episode of The Guardian  -- featuring the character portrayed by Alan Rosenberg receiving a diagnosis of ALS is getting strong support in the ALS community.  We are now establishing an alliance with the show that we anticipate will result in a solid relationship with the creators and access to Alan for various opportunities.  Alan visited the National Office recently to meet with patients and patient services staff from the Los Angeles Chapter in an effort to refine his character for future episodes.

You can help us as we mobilize a letter writing campaign to support this show and keep the storyline on the air.  This show plans to continue with the ALS theme if it gets picked up next season.  The attached letter has been approved and endorsed by the show's creator at CBS.  Also is a list of CBS executives to direct the letters to their attention.

Thanks for your help in creating awareness about ALS.

Help Save The Guardian From The National Downs Syndrome Society!

38.jpg

With the birth growing closer and the 2004 season coming to a close, THE GUARDIAN has not been renewed by CBS and has been mentioned in the media as a show that might be cancelled.

The producers of THE GUARDIAN have proven through these recent episodes that they plan to handle the plot about Down syndrome in a responsible and sensitive manner. They have worked to ensure that their representation is accurate and realistic. If THE GUARDIAN is renewed for the 2004/2005 season, issues affecting the Down syndrome community will continue to receive high visibility with a national primetime audience. The public awareness that can be generated through this type of show is considerable!

TV's Baby Boom

sexy_wendy.jpg

Wendy Moniz
The Guardian
The Facts Age: 35
Due date: Mid-June
Sex: Unknown
Husband: Actor Frank Grillo

The Scoop...When Moniz found out she was pregnant with her first child, it was a classic case of life imitating art. "A month before I got pregnant, I got the script where my character discovers she's pregnant," Moniz says. Although she didn't love seeing her weight gain captured on screen-"I wondered if the baby was in my stomach or my butt!"- she did appreciate the perks that came with not having to hide her pregnancy. "They bought me all these great maternity clothes."

LOVED BEING PREGNANT BUT...didn't like developing an aversion to her favorite food, chicken.

"Guardian" will return early!

25.jpg

"Guardian" creator David Hollander said he's trying not to read anything into the network's decision as it pertains to the future of "The Guardian". "I think the loyal audience will be thrilled. It's a really beautiful arc that goes to places the audience expected but never really expected would happen. If this is the finale of the series, it's a really lovely finale. If not, it's a great launching pad for next year, and it's another corner I must write myself out of. Not a cliffhanger, but certainly a new beginning." Hollander said.  For a full report  on event, click here.

"The Guardian"(CBS, on hiatus. Returns at 9 p.m. Tuesdays on April 27): A traditional CBS drama about a young Pittsburgh lawyer. Ho hum. Except that Simon Baker's fascinating, layered portrait of a tortured soul, the frequently anguished, misbehaving Nick Fallin, is a quasi-subversive triumph on a play-it-safe network like CBS. Kill "Century City" and renew "The Guardian." For a full report on the event, click here .

TV Q&A with Rob Owen!

25.jpg

Thursday, March 25, 2004

Q: Thanks to the recent Dish TV vs. Viacom dispute I missed the last episode of "The Guardian." When, if ever will they be repeating the last season? I don't understand CBS bringing on a new show when "The Guardian" is one of the best shows on. It is refreshing in that it is not "reality" or "CSI" which seems to be the current fare.

-- Barbara Bendera, Blairsville

Ratings for "The Guardian" are not good in reruns, which is why it has been replaced by first-run episodes of the mid-season replacement "Century City." It's possible CBS will rerun the current season this summer, but given that they replaced "Guardian" reruns last summer with a reality show, I wouldn't hold my breath.

News about Wendy Moniz!

whatasmil.jpg

Wendy Moniz captured the role of Lulu Archer after auditioning for another part in the series. Soon after her first audition, Moniz was delighted to learn that the producers were interested in seeing her for Lulu Archer. Upon reading the script, Moniz knew the character of Lulu was a natural fit.

Influenced by her mother's involvement in community theatre, Moniz began acting at the tender age of five and continued through high school and college. "I can't remember a time when acting wasn't a part of my life."she says.

The Most Attractive(Famous)Women in America:2004!

moniz.jpg

25. Wendy Moniz / 34 / Missouri

(Guiding Light, Tuesdays with Morrie, The Guardian)

Wendy's natural look and demeanor on The Guardian is far removed from the flashy and glossy appearance of her soap days and this fits her much, much better. She is almost literally delectable-looking.

Her character is incredibly down-to-earth and the only marginally sane adult on the show. She makes you root for Lulu on the one hand but you also wish she could find someone better than the show's protaganist, recovering addict and emotional lockbox Nick Fallin, to fall for. Moniz brings out all the subtleties and contradictions in such a frustrating life.

And did I mention she is absolutely smokin'?
