The Family Room

When your kids are small, and you have a designated family room, it can be a rather daunting room to decorate.  Comfort and function are the main components of a young family's family room.  Who wants to panic every time a ride along toy crashes into the entertainment center?  Who wants to spend 3 years trying to remove crayon from the he coffee table?  Give your kids an are to play in, supply them with big containers to throw their toys into and give your partner somewhere to put his feet up and enjoy the ride.  Sure children should be raised with "good rooms" so that they know not to touch when visiting other peoples homes.  But there is such a thing as turning your back "for just a minute".  Decorative accents and furnishings should be durable and not hold great sentimental significance or monetary value.  Emphasis on comfort, add style and color with lots of floor pillows and throws.   Kids love photographs of people they know and care about (don't we all?) so cover the walls with interestingly framed photos of family, friends and pets.

If your kids are 1/2 grown or you simply don't have any, you do not have a family room as much as media room.  Big difference.  Pretty obvious why, so enough said for now.

This family room performs several functions:  Entertaining, Media and Esthetics.  While the pale creams and taupes of the furnishings and carpet  would indicate the absence of small children, teenager's would be comfortable in this room.  When you examine this picture do so thoroughly, from the window treatments to the wall sconces on the fireplace to the lamp on the side table.  There is such a subtle mix of casual and elegance in this room.  Note the use of the fireplace as the secondary focal point.  Make a conscious effort to identify the casual aspects of the room - the elegant aspects are a little easier to pick out so start with those if you like.
