Houseplants
Although a vast number of Interior Designers frown upon using Tropical plants as living indoor sculpture, plants, artificial or living are great for adding texture and color to a room.  The real thing purifies our air and whether artificial or real, create a natural, feel good environment that our bodies respond to, our blood -pressure automatically lowers in a room with plants in it.  Take care when using them though.  They should be healthy, clean and in mint condition.  Avoid color coordinated pots, the look is dated and the pots look cheap.  Instead go with wicker baskets, garden urns or terra-cotta, depending on your budget.  Better to have one large specimen in a beautiful urn than a grouping of small plants in cheap plastic "decorator" pots. Some plants are harder to grow than others, and purchasing them can not only be a waste of money but can also be messy and unsightly as the plant drops leaves in it's slow dance of death.  Do not hang plants from the ceiling in macramé hangars.  There are other options out there, wall sconces, shelves, tall pedestals.  The Barefoot Robin is actually sourcing out some inexpensive pedestals of varying heights, so coming soon.....

If you really like the look of real plants and are interested in several in your home, treat them as a hobby, buy a book, and ask a lot of questions at the greenhouse.  If you are interested in only growing a couple of specimen plants, purchase them from a greenhouse, ask a lot of questions, and take notes.  It can be done and there are some indoor plants that are almost impossible to kill.  The Barefoot Robin recommends African Violets, Heart Leaf Philodendrons, Dragon Trees and Christmas and Orchid Cacti.

African Violets make a fresh statement in a room and are surprisingly easy to care for. You simply set the green grower pot they come with into a waterproof container, water them from the bottom, and place them either really close to a north facing window, or a bit farther away from an east facing window (no more than 5 feet).  The other plants we listed as easy to grow have the same lighting requirements.  Until you get to know your plant, always stick a finger into the soil to make it wants water when you are ready to water it.  If you forget to water, most plants will wilt, you water, they perk back up, and you may lose a couple of leaves.  Over water a plant and you kill it.  Right now.

When using artificial plants, choose those that look real, ask Robin and she can set you up with reasonably priced silk plants that will look as real as possible and be the right size for the space you are concerned with.  They are perfect for the bathroom and brightening up dark corners and hallways.  Definitely invest in a spray can of Silk Plant Cleaner and use it!  There is nothing more disgusting than a faded old tree, covered in dust and cob webs. The cleaners on the market will not only clean and revive the color, but will repel dust in the future.

Echoing the view from the vast expanse of windows in this room with the use of plants and natural wicker has achieved a naturesque feel.

The uncontested beauty of Orchids will befit any style of room.  Although not as difficult to grow as commonly conceived, they do have specific growing requirements that can be sticky to achieve.  The Barefoot Robin has made available for purchase artificial Orchids that, when placed next to the real thing are undetectable as fake.  Living Orchids come with a substantial price tag as well.  A real Orchid can set you back a minimum of $45.00 - an artificial one from The Barefoot Robin:  $30.00

In Feng Shui, one of the best things to introduce into the home are thriving green plants, which bring life into corners and are also superb for deflecting bad Chi created by columns, beams, and other sharp angled objects.  When using plants inside your home, try to select those with broad rounded leaves that resemble the "money plant".  Cacti with prickly thorns should be avoided but succulent cacti create excellent Feng Shui.  Plants can be used to activate various corners in your home depending on the life aspirations you wish to emphasize.   For example, if you wish to enhance your career prospects, try placing a healthy green plant in the northern sector of your house.  Does none of this make sense to you?  Then you better check out our page titled "Feng Shui".
