Home: Soldotna, Alaska . Live on 5 acres, 3 miles outside of town, call it Dreamtree. Thor 53 retired 6 years ago for medical reasons, we built this place by ourselves mostly out of vertical logs. Have 5 buildings, office (new this summer) , guest house , house, woodshop & 8 x 10 shed for 4wheeler.

Margot, has own bookkeeping business with 1 Dell & 3 Gateway computers. The Dell is 266 Pentium2, 64 ram, 8.4 hard drive, 8 gig tape backup & sound. 120 Gateway, 200 mmx with all the goodies, & my puter is a 166mmx, 32 ram, 6.4 hard drive, sound & zip drive. The new office has 4 puter stations 3 part-time employees, Launie, Jeff & Kim. Kim will be starting full time on January 15, 1998. We have 2 Hewlett Packard deskjet color printers & 2 laser printers. At this time I am waiting for a new HP 1000 color printer & HP 5pse color flatbed scanner. Margot has a thriving bussiness with 40+ monthly clients, 25 more quarterly & 250+ tax clients & works way way to hard. As the first of the year (98) we will start designing webpages for clients here on the Kenai Peninsula. Margot is also a Peachtree tech. & does setup & trouble shooting here in Alaska. She has 10 years on Peachtree & computers. 25+ years as a full charge bookkeeper.

Thor on the other hand is almost a "newbie" hehe. Just over a year & half on the computer. Do not let this mislead you. I have spent more than a year on mIRC, 3 to 12 hours every day. I have been a AOP on #50+retired since late summer 97. Have 400+ wave/midi files (starting on MP3's) 300+ popups & lots of alias files with sound attached. I teach on channel & am always glad to give you a hand , just ask. I try to write an article about Alaska for every channel Newsletter. On channel you will see me as SIR^WOOKIE, ^Wook, or many other variations of ^Wook. In my life I have done a number of things from being a biker bum to Director of a large Alcohol & Drug treatment program here in Alaska. I have travelled or lived in all but 3 of the 50 states (missed Maine Vermont & Massachusetts) Mexico & Canada.

5 dogs are our children, 1 Dobie-Bubba, and 4 mini weenies. Hobbies: Woodworking, IPSC shooting (which because of health have almost stopped ) and computers.

How I spend my 'off channel' time: I am a relative newcomer to 50+Retired (I have been on the channel off and on for about a year now). I have been an avid computer user ever since the first time I first used a mainframe terminal in the 70's when I was a student at the University of Arizona (hey--we had to punch cards in those days!).

Since the 70's I have managed (more or less) to avoid reality by earning a BA in Anthropology from the U of AZ (1979) http://www.arizona.edu/ ,an MA in Archaeology from Southern Methodist University (1987) http://www.smu.edu/ (yes, I *have* been on digs--in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas), and finally an MS in Information Studies from Drexel University (1992) http://www.drexel.edu/

I have used computers extensively, both for fun and work and I think the Web is the greatest thing since the microchip and e-mail!. Now, as a Database Editor at the Institute for Scientific Information in Philadelphia, PA, I am responsible for coordinating the evaluation of electronic journals on the Internet. I was born--good to place to start :)--in San Francisco, Ca during the mellow days eight years after World War 2 ended. My parents had a cattle ranch north of San Francisco, beneath the beautiful Mt.Shasta mountain. Kind of funny that when my Mom was pregnant with me, married to a cattle rancher, all she wanted to eat was Lamb. So my father went out and bought a herd of sheep, which grazed on the lawn and were very quickly "rustled" by some local Indians.

We moved to Victoria, British Columbia when I was 6 years old and I went to the first through 7th grade in Canada. Then off to Nova Scotia where I attended the 8th grade in Middleton.NS. High School was in San Anselmo, Ca. (across the bay from San Francisco in Marin County) at an all girls boarding school. College was in Colorado and Idaho.

I started out as a "Kelly Girl" in temporary help services in San Francisco and progressed in Accounting thru the years. In 1974 I moved to Alaska and worked for several large corporations dealing in the Oilfield.

After I met and "snagged" my wookie in 1980 we have had a colorful and multi faceted life as described on wookie's web page.

We now live and have for many years in Soldotna, Alaska. I have a business providing Bookkeeping services and Tax Preparation for our community. Most of my clients are individual businesses, that could not afford or would not require a full time bookkeeper, but of course need some one to look after them. Our clients typify the Alaskan image--fisherman, guides, contractors, oil recyclers,sub sandwich makers, etc etc.

Our office building is an open structure with no interior walls, we designed it that way to give us a feeling of openess for both our comfort and our clients. Wookie has described it much better than I could. What is really important in our office are the people. Wookie up front, guarding the entrance, right behind him our Kimbers. Kimberly, mother of twin seven year old girls who are as precocious, intelligent and beautiful as their extremely special mom. And next to me, our Jeff. Jeff has been with us just a year, but we have adopted him completely. He is an unusually mature and brilliant young man who has a kindess and gentleness so rare in this world.

I always say that you are enhanced or should be, by the company you keep. Well, as you can see I am a very blessed woman to have such wonderful surroundings and inordinately special people.

My most favorite pastime and where I would like to be alot alot more is our 50+retired channel. I cannot,in a few pages describe all that the channel and its members mean to me, so I will just say that I consider it and them to be my family.

Biography: Reggie White, no I am not the defensive end of the Green Bay Packers, even though I would like to have his money. I live in Great Falls, Montana with the beautiful Sunbeam, who I hope to make my wife one day soon. We run the Wright Nite Inn Rendezvous Motel. Additional Information about OPs

The Principle of Invisible OPs:

Since the activation of #50+retired on DALNet, the primary goal of the OPs has been "invisibility." It quickly becomes evident in IRC chatting that "too many chefs spoil the soup," and the atomosphere of friendly chat can be lost when the main activity of participants is controlling various aspects of channel operation (or each other). In #50+retired on DALNet, the prime operating principle is constant chat in a safe and friendly environment, without a need for constant channel control or manipulation.

Since activation of the new channel on DALNet, in January 1997, the number of authorized OPs (or auto-ops) has been severely restricted. It is the policy of #50+retired to maintain only enough OPs to adequately serve and protect the channel, and no more than three OPs are to be active on the channel at any time. Each OP is appointed by invitation, and on-line "opping" is specifically prohibited. Each OP contributes one or more specialties to the channel, and must agree when invited to be an OP to contribute to the technical working of the channel through his or her experience. When on the channel, each OP is expected to expend whatever effort may be necessary to preserve the calm, friendly atmosphere for which #50+retired has become well known. This means that OPs are to pay attention to the needs of users above anything else they may be doing. In other words, the ops are on their toes so that you don't have to be!

The Principle of Helpful OPs:

The OPs are available at all times to assist you; they are not there to "show off" or strong arm anyone. Since OPs are chosen for their knowledge and/or experience, they can often assist with software problems, IRC issues or other information. In addition, if you are having difficulty with other IRC users, the OPs can help you "ignore" and otherwise deal with annoyances or harrassment. Please don't hesitate to ask a #50+retired OP for assistance at any time, on any IRC (and many other computer) related subjects. They may not know all the answers, but they can help you find them.

When #50+retired OPs do their jobs well, they are hardly noticed as OPs at all, and the channel is a constant scroll of interesting and/or entertaining chat. Please let the OPs know when you enjoy yourself on the channel; that means they have done their job well. If you have ideas for new channel features, or other suggestions for improvements that will benefit all of the channel users don't hesitate to pass them along to any #50+retired OP.
