How to...

(Click a link below for more information.)

The #50+retired "How To..." page has been developed by the channel OPs in response to the numerous on-channel requests for guidance, clarification or help with a variety of topics. The topics include both general Windows functions and specialized IRC tasks - from the simple, like cut-and-paste in Windows, to the quite complex, such as scripting and automated control of an IRC program.

The topics come directly from the most frequent requests for help that we receive on the #50+retired channel. As new requests arise (usually in connection with new mIRC or PIRCH features) the list will expand.

Please Note: If you have been sent here in response to a request for help on the channel, we hope you will understand that it is because this is the most thorough and efficient way to answer some questions. If you still have trouble after working through the help available here, don't hesitate to ask us for additional clarification.

We hope you find what you're looking for here. Many have observed that they have saved time, or found features previously unknown by using this page. We invite you to refer others to this site, whether or not they are active on #50+retired. Enjoy these "HowTo" files, and if you have suggestions for improvements or for new "HowTo" files, please let us know through on of the OPs on #50+retired. See you there!!!

How to cut and paste

Cut and Paste

You simply wouldn't believe how often we hear the words, "What do you mean? How do you paste something?" If this is your question, don't shy away, and certainly don't think you are "dumb" or that you are the only person on IRC who is not a computer engineer!
Cutting (or copying) and pasting text in Windows applications is one of the most powerful and useful functions in the Windows program, and is so "basic" that many of us forget how bewildering and impossible it seems at first. With "cut and paste" you can move almost anything from text to pictures from one program to another. Aside from being an essential function in many programs, "cut and paste" is a prime means of building aliases, popups and scripts in mIRC.

Cut and paste is a simple operation - but only after you've done it a couple of times. Before that, it can seem pretty intimidating. These illustrated instructions guide you through the process, step-by-step, and before you know you it, you'll be the expert teaching others!

How to ignore someone
How to...
Ignore
an obnoxious user

You don't have to be on IRC very long before discovering that there are certain people you could easily do without - especially if you use a nickname that looks or sounds the least bit female. In real life it is impossible to truly "ignore" someone. You may refuse to react to someone, but you can't really ignore them as if they weren't there. However, in IRC you can!

When you need to avoid an obnoxious person, these instructions will teach you the commands to arrange things as if "Mr_Jerk" never existed at all. You'll never again see anything "Mr_Jerk" says or does, much less be bothered by it. Take our word for it, it drives the jerks crazy! But it makes your IRC so much nicer...

mIRC comes ready to send and receive in colors, but things get changed, buttons get clicked unawares. If your mIRC is not properly doing colors and you need to "fix" it, this is the section for you!

Register a Nickname

If you're like most of the rest of us, you want to use the same nickname every time you check in to your favorite channels. Yet, when someone else is already using your favorite name, you're just plain out of luck! DALNet allows you to "register" a nickname (if it's not already registered) so that it's available every time you log on, and only you can use it. Here's how...

Send Files by DCC
Sound files, programs, text files, popups, aliases, pictures... any file on your hard drive can be sent directly to another user - even while you type!

DCC file transfer (like DCC private chat - see below) is not only popular, but offers advantages over regular on channel conversation. See what the difference is, and learn how to use DCC. Don't miss out on the trading and swapping going on right under your nose! Here's how...

Private Chat
with DCC

Want to make a personal comment? Want to tell a joke? Want to romance an acquaintance but don't want the whole channel to join in? Not everything you type has to be seen by everyone in the channel. Multitasking with mIRC
How to...
Multi-task
with mIRC

Why run mIRC only one time when you can run it twice or more to good advantage. Connect to yourself to test scripts, or run 'bots (only on servers that allow them, of course) by running mIRC twice or more at the same time! Whether you run the 16bit or the 32 bit version, here's how to "multitask" mIRC...
