The System

Colin Onions, with the help of Bill Gitlin and Greg Horoky, has developed a new system of catching smallies.

These guys are probably the best smallmouth anglers I've ever fished with so when they offer up some words of advice, I always sit up and take notice.

You should too.

All parts for the system can be purchased from Bass Pro Shops in kit form or separately & are manufactured under the name Mann's Floating Jelly Tube.
The first thing required for The System is a medium action 6-ft. to 6 ½ ft. bait-caster or spinning rod.  Next an appropriate reel for the rod of your choice, capable of handling 17 pound test line of your choice.
The set up is quite simple with the idea of hanging the lure right in the fishes comfort zone.  After considerable research with a qualified diver it was discovered that the larger fish in any school of smallmouth bass were always 2 to 4 feet above the bottom.  These were the fish that were hardest to reach with consistency and better than average success.  The System overcomes this problem by floating the lure right in the fishes comfort zone and bugging the fish to the point of attack.  Even non-active fish are forced into attack purely because the lure just will not go away.  Although The System was designed primarily for bass it has been found to be effective with all species of fish, even to the point of catching a 34-inch muskie off of Colchester on Lake Erie.  The rig is as follows: first rig a bullet weight and bead on to the 17 pound line followed by a snap swivel.  After looking at the depth sounder to determine the height of the larger fish off the bottom, cut a piece of spider wire [12-20] or some similar limp line and attach it to the swivel.  Next attach a 3/0-bait holder hook to the line and insert it in the nose and along the length of the tube of choice.  Insert the float provided and drop The System into the water and start fishing.  The System is very sensitive and by remaining in constant contact with the bottom, as soon as a fish takes the tube it is instantly transmitted up the line.  Once the bite has been felt the advantage of the longer rod becomes obvious having to move and set the hook on a longer leader.  With time and experience the size of the bullet weight and length of leader will become easier to determine.  This is an excellent all around, good producing fishing system and hopefully you will have as much success with it as I have and also catch those bigger elusive smallmouth bass.

Good Fishing
Colin
