More Background

Har Eitan provides a perfect place for an International Community Center due to its natural beauty, its diverse flora and fauna, its geographical attributes and its spatial/visual links to important cultural and historical sites. It is one of the most beautiful mountains in the Jerusalem area! It is terraced, with springs, old orchards, a small forest and some ruins dating back to the Iron Age. The spectacular view from the summit overlooks New Jerusalem, kibbutzim, Yad Kennedy, the Holocaust Museum and the Mediterranean coast !



Plus the site has historic significance: for over 70 years, the northeastern side of Har Eitan housed an army base, built by the English. 50 years ago, the military facility was turned over to the Israeli Defense Forces, but for the last 14 years, the camp has been abandoned. Even though the 30 buildings (shown above) have been neglected, most of them can easily be restored. The basic infrastructure for an Educational Community Center already exists and its potential is waiting to be unlocked...
