Daniel Davis

    Daniel Davis, was born 1784-1794 (Per 1810 Census), son of Uriah Davis. Daniel was listed in the 1810 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 16-26 (pg. 162, line 25) (9). Daniel witnessed a deed between his father Uriah and brother George; the deed being recorded on 17 Dec 1810 but was written on 16 Jul 1803 (103). Daniel was listed in the 1810 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 16-26 (pg 274, line 25). On 15 Nov 1811 George and Daniel Davis, Executors of Uriah Davis sold 2 tracts of land equaling 300 acres on Glady and Stoney Fork to Benjamin Davis, John Davis witnessed (103). On 23 Oct 1813 Daniel purchased 150 acres on the Grassy Fork of Hominy Creek near Benjamin Davis's line (124).

    Daniel was listed next in the 1820 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 26-45, and 1 female 45+ (pg 118, line 27) (13). On 02 Jul 1823 Daniel purchased 50 acres of land on the waters of South Hominy from George Davis (121). On the same day Daniel purchased 95 acres of land from George Davis on South Hominy Creek (122).

More Information on Daniel before 1810...

     On 04 Mar 1808 Daniel witnessed a deed between his father Uriah Davis and his brother William (115). Then on 01 Jul 1809 Daniel witnessed a deed between his father Uriah and his brother Benjamin (118). Uriah sold 150 acres of land on 31 Jul 1809 on the south side of Hominy Creek to Daniel Davis his son (119).

Benjamin Davis

    Benjamin Davis was born 1787, North Carolina (Per 1850 Census) , son of Uriah. Benjamin was a witness to a deed between his father Uriah and was listed in the 1810 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 16-26, and 1 female 16-26 (pg. 162, line 26) (9). On 15 Nov 1811 George and Daniel Davis, Executors of Uriah Davis sold 2 tracts of land equaling 300 acres on Glady and Stoney Fork to Benjamin Davis, John Davis witnessed (103). On the 22 May 1812 Benjamin sold 200 acres of land on Glady Fork on Hominy Creek to Andrew Caddell (125).

    Benjamin was listed next in the 1820 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 2 males under 5, 1 male 26-45, 2 females under 5, and 1 female 26-45 (pg. 123, line 10) (58). On 20 Sep 1830 Benjamin purchased 30 acres of land on the south fork on Hominy Creek (126). On the same day he purchased another 30 acres of land also on the So. fork on Hominy Creek (127).

    Benjamin was enumerated in the 1830 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male -5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 40-50, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-10, and 1 female 15-20 (pg. 244, line 9) (58). On 04 Feb 1839 Benjamin purchased 370 acres of land on South Hominy from Samuel Brooks (128).

    Next Benjamin was listed in the 1840 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Southern Division Census with 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 50-60, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 30-40, and 1 female 40-50 (pg 139, line 6) (59).

    Benjamin and his family were listed in the 1850 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Southern Division Census: Benjamin; 63 Farmer, NC, Polly; 53, NC, Rebecca E; 21, and William P. Pless; 18, NC (pg 228a, household 437) (60). On 02 Mar 1854, reg on 01 Apr 1857 Benjamin purchased 100 acres of land from George W. Candler Executive of Zachariah Candler on the waters of So. Hominy Creek adjoining his own land witnessed by Henry Davis (376). On 27 Aug 1857 Benjamin purchased 75 acres of land on the waters of Spring Creek adjoining William Lusk's line from William A. Cogdill (387). On 01 Oct 1857 Benjamin purchased 1000 acres of land from George W. Candler of the waters of So. Hominy Creek witnessed by Henry J. Davis (377).

    Benjamin was lastly listed in the 1860 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census: Benjamin; 63, and Polly 59 (pg. 309, household 618) (77).

    Benjamin died intestate ca 1869/70. On 15 Jan 1870 Henry and (Charles) Asbury renounced their rights to be administrators of their fathers Estate, agreeing to have their brother-in-law S(ilas). M. Morgan to be the Administrator. Court papers listed Henry J. Davis, (Charles) Asbury Davis, Emeline Morgan wife of S. M. Morgan, (Rebecca) Elizabeth Pless wife of Isaac Pless, Synthie (Cynthia) Bennett wife of John Bennett, Clerracy Warren, dcd., and leaves eight children (129). Note there was a Mary Poston who married a Benjamin Davis. She was named Mary Davis in her father John Poston's Pension papers by her mother Rebecca Baldridge Poston. John Poston died in Buncombe Co. in 1819. (213). Mary "Polly" was born 30 Aug 1790.(213). On 02 Dec 1885, the family of Benjamin Davis's Estate; Henry Davis; E(lizabeth) A. Davis, C. L. Presley, D. S. Presley, A. S. Warren, Betty Ann Warren, Hannah Warren, Mary Warren, Enoch Wilson, S. E. Wilson, E. J. Bennett, H. M. Bennett, J. M. Bennett (312).

More Information on Benjamin before 1810...

    Uriah sold 100 acres of land on the south fork on Hominy Creek on 01 Jul 1809 to his loving son Benjamin Davis, witnessed by Daniel Davis (118). Daniel and George Davis Executors of Uriah Davis sold 2 tracts of land equaling 300 acres on Glady and Stoney Fork to Benjamin Davis, John Davis witnessed on that last date (103).

John Davis

    John Davis was born 1784-1794 (Per 1810 Census), possibly the son of Uriah, Sr. and Elizabeth Davis. He was listed in the 1810 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 16-26, and 1 female 16-26 (pg. 163, line 1) (9).

    John was listed next in the 1820 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 26-45 (pg. 90, line 39) (58). Could this John be the John that was married or was partners with Margaret "Peggy" Waggoner Hatcher? If it was, that John made a Will in 1820, but it was not proven in court until the July term of 1843. In this Will he mentions his children at that time: Betsey, Washington, William and Peggy Davis. He also mention leaving Jacob Hatcher a one year old colt if he takes care of his mother until he reaches 21. Trustworthy friend Joseph F. Britten was made John's Executor (130). John and Peggy appear to have kept separate households as well. Margaret "Peggy" was listed as head of household in the 1830 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, and 1 female 40-50 (58). John purchased 100 acres of land on Reems Creek from Jacob and and John Waggoner on 01 Jun 1823 (131).

    On 02 Apr 1830 John purchased another 100 acres of land on Reems Creek from Francis Sluder, witnessed by Washington Davis (132). Peggy was listed in the 1830 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, and 1 female 45+ (pg. 244, line 08) (58).

    On 04 Feb 1840 John Davis, Adam Waggoner, George Waggoner, and Henry Waggoner from John Waggoner's Estate sold 260 acres of land on Reams Creek to William Waggoner (133). On 29 Mar 1841 Elnathan Davis was bound to John Davis for the sum of $200.00 (134). Registered on 29 Mar 1841, Elnathan was granted a deed from John Davis for land on both sides of Reems Creek adjoining lands of James Weaver including the place where John Davis lives (241). Peggy was listed next in the 1840 Buncombe Co., North Carolina, Southern Division Census with 1 male 15-20, 1 female 15-20, and 1 female 50-60 (pg. 155, line 22) (59). On 08 Apr 1842 Reg on 17 Nov 1842 John purchased 200 acres of land on Lees Mill Creek at a sheriff sale witnessed by Washington Davis(135). On 02 Mar 1843 John was granted power of attorney of Jacob Waggoner (136). On 28 Jun 1845 Margaret was granted a Chattel Mortgage from Burrell D. Cook (136).On 01 Apr 1846, the heirs of John Davis: Elizabeth wife of Alexander Fore, William Davis, Washington Davis and Margaret Cook wife of Burrel Cook, and James and Martitia Davis sold 200 acres of land on Lees Mill Creek to Lewis Fore (137). Peggy entered into a Chattel Mortgage with Burrel Cook on 28 Jun 1845 (215). On 19 Sep 1845 Margaret purchased 50 acres of land adjoining her own land on South Hominy Creek on the French Broad River from Benjamin O'Kelley, Jr. (216) On 19 Sep 1845 Peggy purchased 50 acres of land on the French Broad River on the water of South Hominy Creek where Margaret Cook lives, from Benjamin O'Kelley, Jr. - Registered on 24 Mar 1846 (139). Peggy then sold 100 acres on land on Reems Creek that was originally granted to Jacob Waggoner, Sr. to her granddaughter Eliza Clark (140). Peggy left a Will dated 21 Aug 1848 and registered on 25 Oct 1848. In the Will she mentions her daughters Elizabeth Fore, Margaret Cook, Martitia/Mortitia Davis, granddaughter Eliza Clark, and sons James (Newton) Davis, Washington Davis and William (A) Davis, and naming William M. Clark her Executor (141). Peggy was the daughter of Jacob and Mary Waggoner, and died in 1848. According to Find A Grave Peggy is believed to be buried in the Alexander Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Asheville, Buncombe Co., North Carolina (142).

Amelia Davis

    Amelia Davis was born _____-1765 (Per 1810 Census). Amelia was listed in the 1810 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 2 males 10-16, and 3 males 16-26, 1 female 16-26, and 1 female 45+ (pg. 166, line 8) (9).

Harmon Davis

    Harmon Davis was born 1784-1794 (Per 1810 Census). He was listed in the 1810 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 16-26 and 1 female 16-26 (pg.179, line 9) (9).

I will next list the Davis's that were not in the 1810 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census records, but were present in 1820.

Aaron Davis

    Aaron Davis was born ca 1791, son of Meshack Davis. He was listed in the 1820 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male under 10, 1 male 18-16, and 1 female 10-16 (pg 74, line 34) (13). On 20 Dec 1822 Aaron purchased 60 acres of land on the meadow fork of Spring Creek - Registered on 24 Jan 1824 (123).

    Aaron was listed next in the 1830 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male under 5, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 5-10, and 1 female 30-40 (pg. 306, line 03) (58).

    Aaron and his family were listed next in the 1840 Haywood, North Carolina Census with 1 male 10-14, 1 male 30-39, and 1 female 30-39 (pg., line) (144).

    I could not find Aaron in the 1850 Census either, however there was an Aaron Davis listed in Georgia Militia Dist. 1027, Fannin Co., Georgia Census, born in North Carolina and living with an Elizabeth that could be him (pg. 1089, household 864) (58). Next door was a Samuel Davis that could be a son and not that far from his brother Isaac. Aaron died in Oct 1869 from Biles in Haywood Co., North Carolina according to the 1870 Fines Creek, Haywood Co., North Carolina's Mortality Schedule(145).

Isaac Davis

    Isaac Davis was born ca 1797, in North Carolina (Per 1850 Census), son of Meshack Davis. He was listed in the 1820 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 18-26 (pg. 74, line 37) (13). Isaac purchased 5 acres of land on the road that runs to Davises Mill from George C. Neill (146).

    Isaac was listed next in the 1830 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 30-40, 2 females under 10, 1 female 5-10, and 1 female 30-40 (pg 306, line 2) (58). Isaac purchased 100 acres on Crabtree Creek from a Sheriff sale; the land once belonged to Edward Gibson (147). On 23 Jan 1833, Isaac sold 60 acres of land on Warm Spring Creek at the mouth of Hazel Flat Creek to William Lusk - Reg on 13 Oct 1836 (344).

    I could not find Isaac in the 1840 Census. His family was listed in the 1850 Subdivision 33, Gilmer Co., Georgia Census: Isaac; 53, NC, Rhody; 48, William; 28, Mary C.; 27, John; 25, Ruth (Adeline); 22, Elizabeth; 19, James; 19, Nancy; 16, Sarah; 13, and George; 9 (pg. 441b, household 1328) (148). On 14 Oct 1854 Mary Davis & others (possibly this Mary) purchased 75 acres of land on the waters of Spring Creek, reg on 28 Dec 1854 Madison Co. (385). Mary Davis, Rutha Davis, Nancy Price, William Hipps, Juda Cook, and Rachael Keener sold 65 acres of land on Meadow Fork (Spring Creek) to Levi Co. Hipps 27 Aug 1857, Madison Co. (386).

    Isaac's family was listed next in the 1860 Georgia Militia District 1027, Fannin Co., Georgia Census: Isaac; 63, Rhody, 58, Caroline; 40, James; 20, Sally; 18, George; 16, John; 13 (pg. 1081b, household 804). (149).

    Isaac was listed last in the 1870 Beaverdam, Cherokee Co., North Carolina Census: Isaac; 71, Rhoda; 70, Adeline Hipp; 39, William Hipp; 17 (pg. 258a, household 125) (150). Rhody was listed in the 1880 Beaver Dam, Cherokee Co., North Carolina Census living with her son James's family (256).

John W. Davis

    John W. Davis born 1800, North Carolina, the son of Isaac Davis. On 01 Jan 1823 a deed from John Davis to Samuel Allison was approved in Open Court (345). On 17 May 1823, John along with other family members sold land (unspecified) on Lambs Creek to David Haddon - Reg on 01 Jun 1827 (346). On 27 May 1823 John along with other family members sold 50 acres on Lambs Creek to Javann Trammel - Reg on 18 Jun 1826 (346).

    John was probably the John Davis listed in the 1830 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 2 males -5, 2 males 5-9, 1 male 30-39, 1 female -5, 1 female 30-39, and 1 female 50-59 (58).

    John was probably the John Davis listed in the 1840 Haywood Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male -5, 2 males 5-9, 2 males 10-14, 1 male 20-29, 1 female -5, 2 females 5-9, 2 males 10-14, 1 female 40-49 (pg. 122, line 9) (144).

    John was listed in the 1850 Haywood Co., North Carolina Census: John W. Davis; 50, NC, Sarah; 53, NC, Eliezer; 22, Benjamin; 21, NC, Margaret; 20, NC, Mary; 18, NC, Rhebecca; 16, NC, Sarah; 12, NC, John; 11, NC, William; 8, NC (pg. 189, household 203) (347).

    John was listed lastly in the 1860 Jackson Co., North Carolina Census: J. W. Davis; 60, NC, J. L.; 21, NC, W. B.; 19, NC (pg. 290,household 176) (348).

    According to Find A Grave John is John Whitfield Davis, born 24 May 1800, died 12 Jun 1862, married Sarah Jane Allison, both buried in the East LaPorte Cemetery, East LaPorte, Jackson Co., North Carolina (349).

Jeremiah Davis

    Jeremiah Davis was born 1795, in North Carolina (Per 1850 Census). Jeremiah was listed in the 1820 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 26-45, and 1 female 26-45 (pg. 74, line 46) (13). Jeremiah purchased 76 acres of land on Sandy Mush Creek on 23 Mar 1820 from Nathan Harrison adjoining Joseph Wilson's line (151). On 18 Jul 1828 Jeremiah purchased 50 acres of land on Little Pine Creek including an improvement made by Nathaniel Davis (152).

    Jeremiah was listed next in the 1830 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 30-40, and 1 female 30-40 (pg. 263, line 8) (58). On 11/17/1836 Reg on 03/09/1842, Jeremiah Davis sold 162 ac of land (unspecified) to Jeremiah, mentions conditional line between James Davis and Nathaniel Ingle (363). On 23 Jul 1838 Jeremiah sold 282 acres of land on the west side of the French Broad River at the mouth of Bear Creek to William Johnston of Haywood Co. (154). On 08 Apr 1839 Jeremiah purchased land (unspecified - probably the land mentioned in the next deed) on the west side of the French Broad River at the mouth of Bear Creek from Minzy Thomas on 06 Feb 1837 (153). Jeremiah purchased 162 aces of land from James Davis on 09 Mar 1842 (155). On 01 Oct 1843 Jeremiah sold 162 acres of land (unspecified) to John Reeves, mentions an unconditional line between Jeremiah and Nathaniel Ingle (372). On 19 Jan 1843 Reg on 03 Aug 1852 in Madison Co. Jeremiah purchased land (unspecified) on the waters of Spring Creek from James Brown (368). Jeremiah purchased land located on Shut In Creek on 30 Nov 1844 (156). On 04 Jan 1847, Reg in the Spring Term 1854 Jeremiah sold 50 acres of land on Spring Creek to J. H. Woody (371). On 08 Oct 1849 Jeremiah purchased 50 acres of land on Hughey Branch on Spring Creek joining Joseph Lusk's land (239).

    Jeremiah was listed in the 1850 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census, Jeremiah; 55, NC, and Mary; 60. (pg. 234, household 516) (60). On 11 Feb 1859 Jeremiah purchased 100 1/14 acres of land on Spring Creek from John Sexton, reg 25 Oct 1859 Madison Co. (389)

    Jeremiah was listed next in the 1860 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census living with George and Rutha Sexton's family, Jeremiah; 65, NC (pg. 321a, household 354) (61).

Elnathan/Nathan Davis

    Nathan (Elnathan) Davis was born ca 1796 (Per 1850 Census). His family was listed in the 1820 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male under 10, 1 male 18-26, 1 female under 10, and 1 female 10-16 (pg. 90, line 35) (13). He was living near Henry Waggoner, and John and Alexander Davis.

    Elnathan was listed next in the 1830 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 3 males under 5, 1 male 5-9, 1 male 10-14, 1 male 30-39, 1 female 10-14, and 1 female 20-29 (pg. 257, line 16) (58).

    Elnathan and his family were in the 1840 Buncombe Co., Southern Divison, North Carolina Census with 1 male under 5, 2 males 5-9, 3 males 10-14, 1 male 15-19, 1 male 20-29, 1 male 40-49, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-9, 1 female 15-19, 1 female 30-39, and 1 female 60-69 (pg. 137, line 2) (59). A bond between Elnathan and John Davis was recorded on 29 Mar 1841 for the sum of $200.00 (134). Also, registered on 29 Mar 1841, Elnathan was granted a deed from John Davis for land on both sides of Reems Creek adjoining lands of James Weaver including the place where John Davis lives (240).

    Elnathan and his family were in the 1850 Buncombe Co. Census: Elnathan; 54, NC, Lucretia; 49, Francis M.; 18, Andrew J. 16; Newton; 12, Margaret E; 14, Thomas J.; 10, Jesse W.; 8, and Nancy E. Poor; 1 (pg. 291, household 1289) (60).

Alexander Davis

    Alexander Davis was born ca 1794 (Per 1850 Census). He was listed in the 1820 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 16-18, and 1 female 10-16 (pg. 90, line 40) (13). Could

    Alexander was listed next in the 1830 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 5-10, 1 male 30-40, and 1 female 60-70 (pg. 257, line 17) (58).

    Alexander was listed next in the 1840 Buncombe Co., Southern Division North Carolina Census with 1 male 15-20, 1 male 40-50, and 1 female 70-80 (pg. 257, line 17) (59).

Peter Davis

    Peter Davis was born ca 1780-1790 (Per 1820 Census). He was listed in the 1820 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 18-26, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16-18, and 1 female 45+ (pg. 92, line 10), living next to Reason Davis (13). Could Peter be a brother to Reason? Reason named a son Peter. On 02 Dec 1821 Peter purchased 130 acres of land on Indian Camp Branch from John Roberts, Reg on 09 Mar 1842 (364), Peter sold that land on the same day to Thomas Dockery, witnessed by Clem and Jeremiah Davis (365). On 11 Jul 1823 Peter purchased 99 acres of land from Benjamin S. Brittain (158). On 05 Apr 1827 Peter purchased 100 acres of land on the Big Laurel on the French Broad River from John M. Kilgore (159). Peter purchased 99 acres including the mouth of the Big Laurel on the French Broad River for back taxes - the land once belonged to John Waddell (160). Peter sold 100 acres of land on the Big Laurel to David Farnsworth on 02 Jan 1829 (163). Peter purchased 50 acres of land on the French Broad River, mentions including Lewis Bell's improvement on 23 Dec 1829 Reg on 04/09/1831 (355)

    I could not find Peter in the 1830 or 1840 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census records. Peter purchased 50 acres of land on the French Broad River, including Lewis Ball's improvement on 09 Apr 1831 (164). Peter purchased 130 acres of land on Indian Camp Branch from John Roberts on 09 Mar 1842 (165). Peter lastly sold that 130 acres of land to Thomas Dockery on the same day, witnessed by Clem and Jeremiah Davis (166).

Winefred Davis

    Winifred "Winey" Davis was born ca _____-1745 (Per 1820 Census). She was listed with her family as head of household in the 1820 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 10-15, 1 female under 10, 2 females 26-44, and 1 female 45+ (pg. 94, line 07) (13). Winey was not listed in the 1830 Census, however there was a woman aged 60-70 living with Alexander Davis? (58).

George Douglas Davis

    George Douglas Davis was born 01 Jul 1781 (Find A Grave), the son of Isaac and Mary "Polly" (Davidson) Davis. He was listed in the 15th Company, North Carolina Regiment in 1812 (167), and the he was listed in the 1st Regiment, Buncombe Co., North Carolina in 1814 (168). George D. was listed in the 1820 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 2 males under 10, 1 male 26-45, and 1 female 26-45 (pg. 112, line 17) (13). On 27 May 1823 A deed from Polly Davis, G. D. Davis, Samuel Johnson and Salina his wife & J. W. Davis heirs of Isaac Davis to Javan Trammell for 50 acres of land (On Lambs Creek) 17 May 1823 was duly proved by the oath of D. Hadden & ordered to be registered (95). On 05 Oct 1826, recorded on 30 Dec 1828 George D. along with Benjamin Gullock and David Hadden were granted land on the French Broad River from Javan Trammel (169).

    George was listed in the 1830 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 30-40, and 1 female 40-50 (pg 207, line 27) (58). George D., Benjam Gullock and David Hadden were granted land from Javan Trammel on 15 Sep 1831 (170). On 02 Apr 1832 George purchased 100 acres of land on Bridge Creek (171). On 12 Apr 1838 George sold 100 acres of land on Lambs Creek to William Trammel (172).

A deed from Surry Davis to Robert H. Gillespie for 250 acres of land dated 16 Oct 1823 was duly proved in open court by William Gillespie and ordered to be registered (175). Surry may have been the Surry Davis in the 1790 Pendleton, South Carolina, and 1800 and 1810 Greenville Co., South Carolina Census. Surry may also be the Surry Davis listed in the 1830 Habersham Co., Georgia Census.
