STORY BEHIND THE POEM DOG BITE

Ken Lemckert who has been previously featured in the poems Lemckert’s Lament and Fight Night, is now in the dog squad and is at it again.

Ken and his partner “Duke” attended to a call on Main Street of a B&E (Burglary) in progress. Several patrol units had arrived first and set up containment around the building. Ken and Duke entered to search for the suspect. Ken did everything by the book, including calling inside and announcing the building would be search with a dog. This would allow the suspect a chance to surrender. That didn’t happen.

Ken entered with Duke on a lead and proceeded to search. After a short time, they found the suspect. Ken ordered him to lie down on the ground. The man refused to comply and was making motions to run. Despite several warnings, the guy failed to comply and by this point Duke was wound right up. Ken released the lead, but instead of making a beeline for the suspect, Duke turned and bit Ken. The suspect seeing this, must have figured “my gawd, if the dog is going to bite his own master, what will he do to me?” Anyway, he immediately dove face down on the ground, proned out and surrendered.

An absolutely
shocking footnote to this poem, and I regret to inform you all, is that
on June 21, 2001, Ken Lemckert suddenly passed away due to a malignant brain
tumour. Kenny, you will be deeply missed by us all.
