Ride Suggestion!
We have some weekends with no rides scheduled. If you have an idea for a ride, please call or email Steve Johnson and talk it over with him. We are interested in your thoughts for rides and would be most appreciative of any suggestion you have.
Lets welcome Shyra Houghton, Activities Officer, Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.! You have probably seen her around the shop, on the Charleston Ride, helping with registration at the Dale Moorefield Memorial Ride and on the Dinner Ride to Hogansville Heros. Welcome Shyra and looking forward to working and riding with you and Chris.
Well, here it is August already, and boy has it turned hot! I know we have had a lot of rain hear lately, but I think I had rather ride in the rain than the heat. I am looking forward to cooler weather and riding this fall in the mountains to see the Fall Foliage. The heat and rain has not deterred some of us from our riding activities. We had a great turn out for the Frank's Dinner Ride. Sorry we had to switch destinations at the last minute, but Jim Keely thought he would be back to riding by then but the doctor said know. We are saving the Oconee Dinner Ride for later. We had great participation on Steve's Hogansville Heros Lunch Ride. The food was great but the air condition was not adequate for a bunch of "HOT" motorcyclist and this affected our and the waitress's attitude. Some had left before we got outside to take the picture.
We had an awesome turnout for the Fifth Annual Dale Moorefield Memorial Ride on July 4 "BIG BIG" Thanks to Allan Farmer for setting up and leading the ride for another great job "Well Done! A "BIG Thanks" also goes to Rene' Durham, Patty Tony, Shyra Houghton and Tom Tingle for getting everyone signed in and lined up, Brian Wilson for providing the PA system and the music, a special Thanks to Barry Yarian, the McDonough Police Officer that help us get out of town and Brent Langley, the Newton County Deputy Sheriff that escorted us all the way to Bostwick and the wonderful people of Bostwick for making us welcome. It was a great ride, Bar-B-Que and I am sure Dale appreciated the thought! I am most forgot to thank the Republican Party for providing doughnuts and coffee...for a donation of course!
Don't for get our Willie G. Rides, rides where we give tickets for the drawing of a Leather Jacket at our Anniversary Party. We only have two or three Willie G. Rides per month. So if you are interested in a chance on the leather jacket, you have to attend as many rides as possible and be at the Anniversary Party for the drawing. Remember that you must be a "member in good standing of the Atlanta Chapter too win the jacket."
Please call or email me about any concerns you have about the Atlanta Chapter. All input is welcomed, good or bad. I would like to hear from you!
Remember that alcohol is not permitted on Atlanta Chapter Rides. If you must drink while participating on an Atlanta Chapter Ride, you will be ask to leave the ride. PLEASE! Don't make our Ride Leaders make this decision.
Ride Safe and Have Fun!
B.K. EllisDirector,Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
My dissertation this month is in regard to the topic of RIDES: HOW, WHERE, WHEN, AND WHY.
First and foremost is the requirement: Ride and have fun! This is the rallying cry of H.O.G. The definition of RIDE: We ride motorcycles, not cars, boats, lawn tractors, skidoos, or SUV's with screaming kids inside, etc. In order for us to ride and belong to H.O.G. a Harley-Davidson VIN# is required. The associate member is sponsored by a member and must also understand the concept of THE RIDE.
How: A registered H-D motorcycle in good working order. The member must be licensed by the State Dept. of Motor Vehicles to operate a motorcycle and obey all traffic laws that apply to the riding environment. It is the responsibility of the operator to learn the rules that apply to group riding and a simple question is all that is required on your part.
When: Whenever you can and whenever you feel it is safe to do so - Period.
Where: Because you want to go there - Period.
Why: Because you want to - Period.
My answers to the above questions contain the word you and we a lot and that's because That is what theclub is about. Anonymity is not a position from where to gain support or Respect. Therefore, if you have any recommendations as to rides, feel free to attend the Business Meeting and see if the calendar will allow it, your questions will be answered, and find out what is required to organize and lead your ride.
Ride like an adult - assume the responsibility!
Crank'em up and move'm out! Ride safe!

Everyone be safe.

Well, July was a good month for motorcycle riding. I led a Saturday lunch ride to Hogansville, Georgia, where we all ate at the Hoganville Heros restaurant. I had a half of a delicious hot Reuben sandwich which was more than enough for me. It was a very enjoyable ride of about 55 miles of back-roads which took us from the shop through Sweet Water State Park and down Hwy. 92 to just across the river to Charlie's Market at Hwy. 70. A right turn and you'll enjoy some very pretty country roads with nice turns and curves through the Cochran's Mill area to Roscoe Road with its own beautiful scenery and 90 degree curves, into the city of Newnan. Newnan has some beautiful old homes. We turned onto Hwy. 29, which we followed through Moreland, Grantville and on into Hogansville, where the ride officially ended. It was an hour and a half of really enjoyable easy riding. We had a fairly large group for a Saturday lunch ride...about 20 people with about 15 bikes. Now I'm looking forward to the Top of the River Lunch Ride and the Charlotte flat track races coming up later in July. A lot of good riding is coming up in August, so mark your calendars.
Please, remember to keep your bike serviced...it could be a health issue!
Ride today like you want be able to ride tomorrow!
Please Ride Responsible,
Steve JohnsonRide Director,Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
Hi Gang,
Well the L.O.H. Nashville Ride was a huge SUCCESS! We had thirteen people attend this ride. Friday, we ate lunch at Boswell's Harley-Davidson in Nashville and chilled out for awhile by the pool. Later we went downtown Nashville to a couple of Blues Clubs in Printer's Alley. Man, talk about music. We saw two different bands, both really good, enjoyed some great blues music. Saturday, several went their own way. A few went to see the Titanic Exhibit, some stayed behind and sat by the pool, and a few went to Cool Springs Harley-Davidson and rode through some country side and saw some beautiful horse farms. In the afternoon, we all met at the hotel and headed out to Clarksville. We visited Appleton<'s Harley-Davidson. They had snacks and drinks out to welcome us. That was quite nice. Then it was off to a restaurant in Clarksville. Pretty good eat'n if I say so myself..Ask Gary Swicegood how the hush puppies were. Ed Chowning had a last minute idea to go aboard the General Jackson River Boat for a Sunset Cruise. This turned out to be the highpoint of the trip. We sat on the top deck and listened to a great performer, a one-man band. He could sing anything. The girls danced a little, yeah we sure did and with a 2 year old too. That is another story, but this little girl stole the show to make a long story short...and yes David, JoLynn (the little 2 year old) is an Honorary Member of L.O.H.), So Ed, what do you want to do now?
Sunday, we loaded up and came on home. We had terrific weather all weekend. Couldn't have asked for better weather. This is definitely one of the better rides we have had this year. We will be going again next year.
Let me know how I am doing!
Catch ya later, see ya.

Hello Atlanta H.O.G. Don't forget, the MDA Poker Ride will be Saturday, August 25th. We will have prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and worst hands, door prizes, 50/50 drawing, food and drinks.
Safety Tip of the Month: To helmet or not to helmet - that is the question.
Well, thanks to Governor. Barnes' veto in May, it is still a moving violation if you are caught riding without a helmet in Georgia. I did some research to put together statistics and facts regarding the true merits of wearing a helmet versus not, and found compelling arguments for both sides. The biggest issue is not having the right to make the choice ourselves. This
should be an individual decision just as seatbelts - but that is another argument. That said, my choice is to wear a helmet. I believe it does provide vital protection in the case of an accident and is also a buffer against the elements.
My safety tip this month is to wear a helmet.
If you ride safely, you'll ride longer!

Meet Shyra Houghton Activities Officer
Hello everyone it's me Shyra Houghton and I am so excited about my position as Activities Officer. I have been given this opportunity to tell you a little about myself. As many of you may know I am Chris' wife. We have two beautiful children, Mattson (5) and Anna (2). I have been around for many years, but it seems that I have not been able to ride or participate in many H.O.G. events because I was either pregnant or trying my best at being the perfect "stay at home mom" - HAHA - is there such a thing? My brain is now yearning for some food and so being the Activities Officer, I am hoping to give it what is hungry for. I am still staying at home with my kids, but two years ago I became and Independent Distributor of Premier Designs High Fashion Jewelry. Premier is a company that allows me to make my own hours and work when I want to work. It was actually a way to get some adult interaction - the H.O.G. Chapter never dawned on me. Along with taking care of my kids and my jewelry business I now have my new love and addiction - "motorcycling momma." About a year ago Chris brought home a motorcycle and I jokingly said, "Hey let me try and ride." He actually took me up on the offer. I rode dirt bikes as a teenager and rode on the back with Chris a few times, but that was it as far as my riding experience. He showed me how it worked basically and I got on and went around the neighbor hood about "ah 90 times" until my hand was to tired to pull in the clutch. I never got over 20 mph or out of 2nd gear. I liked it but thought I will just stick to cruising the neighborhood. Well I did not get back on another bike until April of this year. We decided to go to Charleston and thought I would give riding another shot. First things first, I need to learn to ride - so that is what I did. Three weeks before Charleston about six of us met at the shop and Chris lead an impromptu/crash-riding course. It absolutely was in a "sink or swim" situation. I tried out a Sportster (too little), I tried out a Dyna Conv. (too uncomfortable), and then I got on the Heritage Softail, it was just right and I absolutely fell in love with it. I rode that Sunday and the following Monday and went for my test on Friday. I did all right up until the last maneuver and I FAILED. I was okay with that - because I was not going to give up. I went and practiced the maneuvers that I was tested on and went back two weeks later and made a perfect score. After I passed and was ready to pull away I dropped the bike!!!! Ouch, what an ego crusher - the instructor said "good thing you already passed." I just knew that it was the beginning and end of my riding days. Chris was real understanding and said, "Everyone drops it sometime or another." The next day we got all "leathered up" and set out for Charleston. I cannot tell you how awesome of a ride it was. I made it the whole way there and the whole way back without error. I learned so much while having an incredible time. It was my second time there, but this time I was a "rider" and it was a great experience!!! For all you new riders - my advise to you is "sink or swim" you have to GET OUT THERE, be SAFE, use your HEAD and RIDE!!! I recommend the Riders Edge course - it was not available when I started to ride - of course, if it was not booked through October 1, I would have taken it to strengthen my riding ability.
Chris and I want to really start doing a lot with the chapter, now that our kids are a lot easier to leave at home with a sitter. I have a ton of ideas, but I really need your input - so feel free to call anytime. I am going to start coming to the shop two days a week so I can put some time into serving all of you with some fun and exciting NEW events. For all of the wives that think they cannot ride - YES, YOU CAN!!! Go for it - it's a blast! See you on the rode - and remember "sink or swim."

Ride to Shoe Booties
Come out and join us for what hopefully will be a ride to slightly cooler climates as we head across our northern border into North Carolina to eat at Shoe Bootie's Café, located in Murphy, NC.
We set this ride up last year at the suggestion of Joe and Phyllis Sands, but unfortunately I did so on a Sunday only to find out on the check ride that this is a day when they are closed. So this year we planned for a Saturday ride and all should go well. We'll take the long way up and enjoy a good ride featuring lots of curves along the infamous Ga. Hwy 60 N thru Suches and past the T.W.O., heading up into the heart of the Chattahoochee National Forest. To get to that point, we will also ride out the scenic Ga. Hwy 136. Fear not, LaPrade's veterans, I now know my way across 136 like I was born there!!
If you have questions about the ride do not hesitate to call me at (7700 971-4467 or via e-mail at: dynabear@aol.com

Adairsville Inn Dinner Ride August 18, 2001
We will meet at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta at 3:30 pm and leave at 4:00 pm. It is about one and half hour ride. The ride is about 60 mile long. It will be an all back road ride getting there including a covered bridge. We will be close to I-75 and Hwy 41 for a quicker trip home for those in a hurry.
The restaurant is famous for it's Coconut Pie (I do not like coconut, so I can not vouch for it). They serve country cook'n meats and vegetables.
Cheers, David Olszewski Ride Leader, Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
