Light Assault Vehicles

(Desert Patrol Vehicle)

The Desert Patrol Vehicle (DPV) is used by the Navy SEAL's and the Army for missions such as, combat search and rescue and scouting behind enemy lines.  They usually operate in pairs for mutual support and weaponry includes the MK-19 .20 mm gatling gun for the passenger side gunner, the .50 caliber belt fed machine gun, and the M-60 machine gun for the swivel seat gunner.  Additionally, two anti tank weapons (AT-4) can be mounted on the roof for stand off weapons capability.  Special sand tires allow the DPV to transit the deep sand regions of the desert.  The side compartments can carry supplies, gear, as well as wounded or downed airmen.

The U.S. Military recently began to field the up-armored and scout HMMWVs.  The Up-Armored (M1109) will be used by Military Police and Scouts.  The vehicle has 7.62 mm armor piercing protection around the perimeter, 155 mm overhead blast protection, and mine protection under the body.  The scout vehicle will be configured with night vision devices, a Global Positioning Device, a MK19 grenade launcher, and SINCGARS radios.  The picture shows it with a TOW anti-tank missile, but a .50 caliber machine gun may take its place.
