Our trumpeter swan costumes from the 2003 Ski for Women needed more exposure, so we entered the 2004 Anchorage Fur Rondezvous
Frostbite Footrace costume contest along with Carol's dog Kusko disguised as a cygnet.
The contest competition was tough, with feathers flying, although the flamingos let us birds of a different feather flock
with them. Audubon would have been proud. The flamingo dog seemed as befuddled as our cygnet dog. There was no theme to
the contest, it's just that a lot of strange birds happened to turn out, along with clowns, ballerinas, road signs, Greek
and Egyptian gods, and others.
Kusko didn't know what in the world was going on. This was her first time downtown, and her first costume contest.
After the judging, it was an hour until the footrace. We danced in the street in between the Egan and the Performing Arts
Center to rock and roll music. Kusko just stared and stared.

2004 Frostbite Footrace First Place, Best Couples Costume trophy |
Although we came in almost dead last in the "footrace" (Gail is slow anyway and with that trumpeted beak pitching
and yawing above her head she's even slower), we won first place in the couples costume. We'd entered as a group, but they
gave the best group to the flamingos.
It was a long morning for us all, ending with a tricky negotiation of 8-foot birds and a nervous puppy into a low ceilinged
elevator in the parking garage. Once in the car, Kusko leaned her head on Carol's arm, fell asleep, and snored all the way
home.
