Carol and Gail and their Costumes, Volume 1

Trumpeter Swans & Porcupines

Homer Ski for Women 2006. Having pumped up the Anchorage Ski for Women costume silliness level, Carol and Gail aim to achieve the same for the Homer Ski for Women.
Carol and Gail recycled their trumpeter swan costumes, while Nicky Szarzi and Ann Oberlitner bravely volunteered to recycle the porcupine costumes.
We'd make new costumes, but really, storage is becoming a problem.

Homer has two newspapers.

We were on the front page of the February 9th 2006 Homer News, although in the large color photo one swan and porcupine are partially obscured by two skiers inside an erupting fabric volcano (the Magma Mamas, representing the currently erupting Mt. Augustine). The only other ski photo in the paper, on page 26, is the two swans skiing. They may still have the story up at http://www.homernews.com/stories/020806/sports_020906spo005.shtml

The February 9th 2006 Homer Tribune had some OTHER skiers on the front page. But on page 7, there is a closeup of the two magnificent porcupines, Nicky and Ann. And on Page 20, one of the trumpeter swans is featured in a 6-inch-high photo, looking absolutely bats. They really like us!

Ann gave a mouth-watering coffee and chocolate-tasting party at her house before the event. Then we applied feathers and face paint. We were ready to ski like wild animals!

After a face plant or two (really, it was all the wrong wax's fault) Gail uses ski poles as crutches

Nicky and Ann won Most Unique Costume (porcupines). Carol and Gail won best group costume (swans). I guess they considered the musicians playing tape-recorded trumpet music to make them a group. The skiiing times are also recorded on page 26 of the Homer News. No need to discuss that. There was a headwind. Gail's ski wax was too hard. The sun was in our eyes. The planets were not aligned. Who cares, we looked magnificent.

A good time was had by all.
