CANTON MCKINLEY GRADUATE RICHARD
GARMHAUSEN REMEMBERED AS A GENEROUS MAN,
DEVOTED TO HIS FAMILY
Tuesday, September 13, 1994
BY JOLENE LIMBACHER, Beacon Journal staff writer
Carol Criqui had just tucked her 8-year-old daughter into bed Thursday night when she
heard a television report that USAir Flight 427 had crashed and that all on board had
perished. How dreadful, she thought, wondering if anyone she knew might have taken the
ill-fated flight from Chicago to Pittsburgh.
Within hours, she learned that her brother, Richard C. Garmhausen, a 33-year-old Akron
native and graduate of Canton McKinley High School, had died in the crash. She said her
brother, who grew up in Cuyahoga Falls, Stow and Canton, had been on a business trip
and was hurrying home to Pittsburgh to be with his wife and infant daughter.
"Rick was a very outgoing, very positive, generous person with a quirky sense of humor,"
said Criqui, who lives in Maumee in Lucas County. "He was very deeply in love and devoted
to his wife. The sun rose and set on her and the baby."
Garmhausen, a metallurgical engineer for U.S. Steel Corp. in Pittsburgh, spent Thursday in
Gary, Ind., and was flying home from Chicago. He had finished his work sooner than
expected and caught an earlier flight.
Garmhausen is one of five Flight 427 victims known to have ties to Ohio. Also dead are
Richard J. Schell, 47, of Brunswick; Todd I. Johnson, 37, of Alliance; Scott Blake, 34, of
McMurray, Pa., a native of St. Clairsville; and Jocelyn Bush-Taylor of Pittsburgh, formerly of
Shaker Heights.
A memorial service for Johnson will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Science Hill United
Church of Christ in Alliance, with the Rev. Barry Stirbens officiating.
Criqui said her family will wait a while longer before scheduling a funeral service.
As investigators work to recover human remains from the devastating ruins of Flight 427,
Criqui said it is difficult for her brother's wife, Vicky, to deal with the thought that some
victims may never be recovered.
Criqui said her husband's job has made her more accepting of airplane crashes -- her
husband, Thomas, is a commercial airline pilot and is captain of a Boeing 737-300, the
kind of aircraft her brother was on.
"Rick was my brother, and I loved him dearly," she said. "I can accept the fact that he's gone
and there may not be anything to recover. Because of my husband's business, I hear more
about what happens in a crash, but because of the way this plane crashed, everyone
wonders if they were in pain."
Criqui said several people in the industry who build and fly aircraft have told her that
although passengers of Flight 427 may have been terrified, they did not feel anything.
"They were gone in an instant, and I'm very glad for that. Many crashes are less devastating
to look at but much more painful for the people involved."
Her brother, she said, served six years in the Navy before attending and graduating from
Ohio State University. Fingerprints on file with the Navy have been sent to USAir for help in
possibly identifying him.
Her brother also wore his wedding ring on his right hand in accordance with Greek tradition.
"Perhaps that will give us a better chance of identifying him," she said.
Garmhausen's survivors include his sister and his wife, Vasiliki "Vicky" Hartonas, formerly of
Greece and an aeronautical engineer; 5-month-old daughter, Eleni; mother, Florence
Garmhausen of Macedonia; sister, Patricia Garmhausen of Cleveland Heights; and aunt
and uncle, Lawrence and Tina Patti of Gates Mills. His father, Richard Charles
Garmhausen, died of cancer four years ago.
Criqui said that her brother was working on his master's degree and that his first day of
class would have been yesterday. She said he was a whiz at computers and was a
computer consultant. He enjoyed fencing for exercise and liked helping children with their
science projects.
Todd Johnson is survived by his wife, the former Anne V. Valentine, whom he married in
1981; children, Nathaniel T. and Kathryn A.; parents, Ivan C. and Geraldine B. Birkline
Johnson of Elyria; and brothers, Mark B. Johnson of Toledo and Tyler Y. Johnson of Elyria.
He was a graduate of Elyria High School, the University of Akron and Baldwin-Wallace
College. He was a senior marketing specialist for Babcock & Wilcox in Alliance and a
member of Science Hill United Church of Christ and the American Institute of Chemical
Engineers.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be sent to an educational fund for
his children at Premier Bank & Trust, 124 Middle Ave., Elyria 44035.
By Frances B. Murphey, Beacon Journal staff writer
He retired as superintendent of Boston-Northampton schools in 1969 and
watched two of his proteges direct the system when it was renamed Woodridge.
Paul B. Padrutt succeeded Mr. Gregg as superintendent and was followed by
Roger W. Edwards. Both Padrutt and Edwards are now retired.
``He was proud that we stayed in the district and carried on with his
philosophy and procedures,' observed Edwards. `He was a good, sound educator in knowing what was
best for the students and he worked well with the
community.'
Bill Gregg survived two consolidations in his 32-year educational career.
He was superintendent of the Macedonia district when it merged with Northfield to form
Northfield-Macedonia Schools, now Nordonia Hills.
In 1949, he was chosen superintendent of Boston schools and continued in
the top administrative job when Northampton's eight grades were added.
Graduating from the University of Akron in 1933, he started teaching
English and social studies in Stow schools.
During World War II, he spent four years working at the Ravenna Arsenal. He returned to teaching in
1946 in Silver Lake and Hudson and became Macedonia's superintendent the next year.
He leaves two daughters, Janice, in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Cynthia,
in Phoenix, Ariz.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
