3ST (the 1980s)...
Very little information has managed to survive from the 1980s. 3ST apparently won some radio awards in 1983, but not much is known about these either. By this time Triple R had moved off campus, and while students at 3ST may have contributed to Triple R, details are sketchy.  Toward the end of the 1980s, 3ST became more active and started to do test broadcasts.

From our records the management during the 1980s were:

1978 to 80 - Steve Aujard (manager - appointed by SRC)
1981 to 83? - Ian Sutherland
1987 -  Alan James?
1988 - A. Engels  (first name unknown)
1989 - Bill Pemberton (apparently changed name from 3ST back to SRA)
1990 to 91 - Jason Costa (Station Manager) Steve Ballinger (Technician 1991)

According to Andrea Ho, it was as a result of Jason's encouragement that the news service, which was organised by enthusiastic journo students, was continued after the test transmission through on-campus broadcasting.

From what we can tell test broadcasts started in around 1989, the first being done from the studios of 3ST in building 20, top floor. Apparently the transmission site was at Nauru House in Melbourne. 3ST was granted a licence by the Minister for Transport and Communications for the 4th to 17th of  December 1989. Apparently during this broadcast Monash University students had 1pm – 5pm each Tuesday.

Below is a photo of the 1989 executive team at 3ST

L-R: Christine Nicholson (publicity), Jason Costa (production), Bill Pemberton (manager), Trevor Reynolds (assistant programmer), John Edmonds (techie), Brian Carpenter (program director). Absent: Geoff Gerran (chief techie).

The station was licenced again for 16th to 29th July 1990, transmitting from ‘Nauru House' at 80 Collins st Melbourne. For some reason some documents say this broadcast was on 954.8 MHZ at 10 watts.   It may be that in fact 3ST used 94.7 FM for this broadcast.  Jason Costa was station manager during this time. The planned 3-16 december 1990 transmission was postponed until march 1991 (I think it ended up being done from March 4th to 17th).

The next broadcast for 1991 took place between July 22 and August 4  (according to some publicity documents this was test broadcast #6).

Steve Ballinger points out that by 1992 they were doing a couple of test broadcasts each year while still in building 18.

If anyone knows how to contact Bill Pemberton, Jason Costa or anyone mentioned above please contact me.
