Early Days...

As you can see from the time line, student radio started at RMIT in 1962. The university was a technical college at the time, and first broadcasts apparently took place in Storey Hall. Phil Mayer organised these first broadcasts and sowed the seed for campus broadcasting. It wasn't until about 1962 or '63 that a proper studio and campus lines were installed to use as Studio 2

In 1964 a new batch of students joined including John Hill, who progressively updated the equipment and made campus broadcasting a  permant fixtures of life at RMIT. This aural backdrop of student radio on campus remained throught the rest of the sixties and into the 1970s.

John Hill sent me some very interesting  information used in handouts from 1966 which can be found here.

There is also a copy of a Catalyst Student Newspaper article written by John Hill from May 1966, which features photos and information on Studio 2. A JPEG image of it (about 390kb) is located here. I also have a super high resolution one (1.6MB) as well if anyone is interested.

This photo is of Bob Erdos in RMIT Studio 2 26-8-65. Word has it that he was an engineer designing telephone exchanges for Telstra in Sydney.

Here is another photo of Keith Livingston (3XY guest announcer) with John Costa
(left) in RMIT Studio 2 1966.

Lastly John Hill sent this photo of Peter Horan in RMIT Studio 2,  15-9-65. Apparently John last saw Peter 31 years ago driving his mini (at high speed) to do lighting for the Northcote Dramatic Society.
