An Overview...
The purpose of this soon to be extensive site is to collate the myriad
of histories of student radio at RMIT that are floating around in people's
memories. Memories have the habit of fading, and i hope that this
repository for information will enable people to delve into the brief but
substantial history of student run radio in Melbourne. The site has
a decidedly RMIT focus. And one could even say it has an overbearing
focus on the most recent histories. It is hard to build an extensive amount
of information on events and people involved pre 1990.
The first station started operating in the early 60s and many of those first people went on to work for places like the ABC and Channel 7, but have been out of contact with SRA. Student Radio at RMIT is now represented in the form of SRA-FM, an aspirant broadcaster with 400 members and well resourced studios in Building 12. I have constructed a brief and inconcise history. Why am i putting this together? In my two years as Station Manager here, i have been meaning to construct an accurate history of this great stations. We often quote information about how many test transmissions we have done, or talk about the origins, but never appreciated what had gone before us. I find it very rewarding talking to people who were involved in the station, and I wanted to share their anecdotes and stories with other people before they fade away. Hope you enjoy the site, drop me a line if I have missed something or got my facts wrong. Ryan Egan
