cecile freedman emminger - Today |
|
12-01-08 Cecile Freedman - After graduating from Doherty, I attended Worcester State College for
one year. About half way through the year, my friend Shirley Bergman coerced me into meeting her boyfriend Barry Kaufman's
roommate (Barry was at UMASS Amherst), so that she could go visit Barry for Winter Carnival. I agreed, and met my future
husband. Bill Emminger and I married in August 1970 and lived in the Springfield, MA area for several years. We
moved to Florida in 1974 and have lived in the area since then. We have 5 children (2 are adopted nieces of Bill's)
and 7 grandchildren, all living in Florida. I worked in data processing for many years after realizing that a college
degree was not going to happen, and currently work in the Commercial Title Insurance industry here in Florida. While
my parents were still alive, I would travel back to Worcester about once a year to visit with them. Mom passed in 1991
and Dad in 2006. I have a sister in New York City that I visit about once a year, and two brothers still in the Worcester
area. It seems like we just graduated, and here it is almost 40 years later! I hope to make it to the reunion
in 2009.

Susan Lebeaux |
11-18-08; Susan Lebeaux. Was there any committee Susan was not on during HS. Perhaps
but today she is on a very important committee at the FEC (federal elections committee) in DC as an Assistant
General Counsel for Enforcement.
Our Very Own Saul Slovin |
|
Yes indeed - Saul Slovin captured by a T&G Photographer during aTorathon - November 08 at Congregation
Beth. Who said "white men can't dance"! On knowledgeable authority I'm advised the dance is the "hora"
8 - 27 08; The Tree (aka Dan Robbins) checked in to update
on his latest adventure; Imagine he had access to a Shelby and didn't tell us!!!
SInce my diverce, I have met somebody new Elaine
and we are now building a house together. (For you car fans, she just sold her Shelby Cobra. It was the 11th one
made - chassis number CSX-1011 - and the first to be publicly owned, not on the Shelby racing team. It went for $1,000,000
about a year and a half ago and now it's being offered for $1.7M. You can Google the number.
We now live on a beautiful, big lake here in central
Maine. The town is so small that it doesn't have a post office, a school, or even a general store. It's really
the middle of nowhere. The lake is about 7 miles by 3 miles, has lots of interesting islands, and is great for
sailing, kayaking, canoeing, and wildlife. The house is my own design, has a cathedral ceiling, deck overlooking the
lake, a beautiful kitchen, an art studio, wine cellar, media area, attached garage, and guest rooms. It's post and beam
construction. To defray escalating costs, we had to move in last month while it's still under construction. There's
a lot left to build and we're still living out of boxes. It's like indoor camping. We're staying in the guest
bedroom as most of the top floor isn't finished. I don't have a dock in yet so no sailing this year. Still, we
get to see the eagles, osprey, and beaver, and we hear the loons every night. It's a little bit of heaven for us after
the shellshock of our earlier lives.
I've survived (so far) my own bout with cancer.
I was diagnosed with prostate cancer a couple of years ago after being treated for the wrong thing for several years.
It was caught late, but perhaps not too late. I had radical surgery and made a pretty good recovery. Radiation
was tough. I've now graduated to blood tests every 6 months. So far, so good. I have another exam coming
up in October. I always get a little squirrelly before those, waiting for the results.
My job is essentially the same. As of today
I have 249 weeks left to go until I can retire. I check off each one so you can guess how excited I am about my job.
I've been fully engaged with our community theatre
in Farmington and since my divorce, I've been acting constantly. I've become a song and dance man. I'm also the
Managing Director and have been handling the books for 5 years now.
I also play pennywhistle and bodhràn in "Talisker,"
a local Celtic band. We built up a pretty good following and get paid for performances. It's an odd collection
of instruments. The six of us play pennywhistles, bodhràn, recorders, crumhorn, violas de gamba, bouzouki, guitars,
and accordion. Everybody sings. I do a lot of solos. I had been learning how to play uilleann bagpipe, but
with house building and everything else I'm involved with, I had to stop. It's a very difficult instrument and it was
taking too much time. I'll pick it up again when the dust settles a little. I love the sound.
I'm into wine in a big way. My own holding
has increased to around 2100 bottles and the cellar that I'm building as part of my house will hold around 2600. I've
taught a few classes at private parties and every now and again, I wrote an article for the local newspaper. Now that
I've moved, I'll have to start up contacts in a new area. A new wine store just opened in Belgrade Lakes and they already
want me to do something for them. We're discussing what that might look like so await developments on that one.
I may not care for my job, but it pays well enough
and most of the time it's not too demanding. I have somebody who loves me, I live in a great place, and I'm as creatively
involved as I can be. So life is good.
I heard from Josh Gordon about a week ago (through
Facebook, of all things). He was inquiring about a reunion. Next year would be it, wouldn't it? What do
you know? Has anyone taken up the organizational reins? Please let me know.
I hope that you are doing well and that all of
you are in good health. Dennis, thanks so much for remaining as a conduit for contact for our class. It's a wonderful
service that you are providing.
Best to you all - fellow HiLanders!

to Weintraub; There were 50 candles on the birthday cake last week for Dave Weintraub, a former Doherty High Baseball Star.
"Swoops," as his friends in the sports world call him, celebrated his milestone with a four day trip to london,
courtesy of his wife, Linda. Dave is probably best known for a long home run he hit at WPI when he was playing for the Highlanders
in a playoff game. The ball was estimated to have traveled more than 500 feet. (ed. note: SWOOP? also hint hint to all
respective spouses, significant others etc..) 3/17/01; If you saw the Time Magazine Edition 10/9/00 you might
have noticed the section on tributes to business women. If you looked close you saw this picture of a Marsha Mandel, 50,
