Here's how to read the Hull Identification Number (HIN) on your Dynafoil
|
|
Hull Identification Number Location:
Like all other boats built in the USA and Canada after November 1, 1972, the Dynafoil's Hull Identification Number
(HIN) is indented directly into the fiberglass gell coat on the upper starboard rear corner of the transom and just under
the gunwhale where the top half of the stern hull deck meets the transom.
In other words.....upper right rear corner, just under that lip in the body!
Reading The Hull Identification Number:
The the hull numbers were written two different ways
1974-1975 Dynafoils:
The early models had a HID number that read like these:
DYN041550775-96
These are actual numbers from two early models and any help fully decoding them would be greatly
appreciated.
What I do know so far is that:
DYN = The Manufacturer's ID
Code (MIC), Dynafoil, Inc.
04= At this time, I don't know what this number
stands for.
155= At this time, I don't know what this number
stands for.
07= The 7th month of the year of production,
July
75= Year of production, 1975
96= The boat's production number. In
other words, this was the 96th Dynafoil they built.
The later models had a HID number that is in keeping with HID's of the time, and therefore much easier to read.
These HID's look like this:
DYN003080377
DYN = The Manufacturer's ID
Code (MIC), Dynafoil, Inc.
00308= The boat's production number.
In other words, this was the 308th Dynafoil ever built.
03= The Month of production, in this
case March.
77= The Year
of production, in this case 1977.
This is an actual number from a later model. Below are two more HID's from later models and with these,
we can see a pattern that helps in confirming the decoding of the numbers.
DYN003480977
DYN003980478
This indicates that:
- Dynafoil #308 was built in March of 1977
- Dynafoil #348 was built in September of 1977
- Dynafoil #398 was built in April 1978
It appears that between March of 1977 and April 1978, Dynafoil, Inc. built 90 watercraft. So, 90 boats in 13
months. Consider that there are about 20 work days per month, 20 x 13 = 260 work days. 90 boats divided by 260
work days means it took about 2.9 days to build each boat by hand. That time wouldn't include the time it took the spa
manufacturer to make the fiberglass hull, or for the various machining/milling/molding tasks to be done to fabricate all the
front and rear strut components. For example, all the cast aluminum fins, and the front strut which is actually
hardwood with a laminated fiberglass outer covering much like a surfboard.
Bearing this in mind, it's probably not much of a stretch to think that each boat took 1 week's worth of labor.

The Remaining Dynafoils:
If you'd like to share your HID # that would really help make this information more accurate. The table
below will list them all so we can see the number sequences and discover not only how many Dynafoils were made,
but ultimately how many are left and where they are located!
