Action on the Left Flank:
Shiloh (Pittsburg Landing), TN.,

Sunday...April 7, 1862

The 18th Louisiana Infantry Regiment took part in the following engagement with opposing Federal forces. The Federal units engaged were the: 8th and 18th Illinois Regiments and the 13th Iowa Regiment of Brigadier General John A. Mcclernand's division along with Battery D., 1st Illinois Artillery.

The 18th Louisiana was to assult the Federal forces along with the 16th Louisiana Volunteers, the 38th Tennessee, the Orleans Guards, and the Crescent Regiment. They were to be supported by Ketchum's battery.

The assult was to be coordinated and all units were to assault the Federal lines simultanously. Actually, the other units were late in getting into position and when given the order to begin, the 18th Regiment was the first unit to climb out of the ravine and begin the assault...alone, with the other units following and each assaulting almost as individual units, thus allowing the Federal troops to concentrate their fire on each unit separately, rather than their fire being directed across a broader front.

The results were pretty much as expected with each assaulting regiment in turn marching up and over the protective ravine walls and into the face of heavy Federal fire, thus, receiving the brunt of the fire from the opposing Federal forces...and incurring heavy casualities.

The 18th Regiment suffered the heaviest losses with 2111 total casualities (killed, wounded, missing and captured) out of a force of approximately 500 men. The other units involved faired somewhat better; but they also received substantial casualities during this brutal assault.

From the graph depicted at the left, one can see that the brunt of the Federal fire was directed at the center of the line of advancing Confederate (18th Regiment Louisiana Infantry) troops with the resulting carnage...

A passage from Shiloh: Bloody April,2 by Wiley Sword relates this fateful moment in time...which is now a part of American history...

"...Unknown to Pond and Ferguson, an aid from General Hardee's staff had just approached Ketchum's battery and ordered it further to the left, where some of Sherman's infantrymen were beleived to be reforming.

Deprived of half their artillery support, Pond's Louisianians filed into the ravine bisecting the creek valley, running east between the camps of the 14th and 15th Illinois. Pond hoped to use the second ravine to cover his approach to the enemy's open-field perimiter. But when only halfway along this ravine, Ferguson ordered a direct assult. Although McAllister's battery was immediately in front, the distance was great--about three hundred yards.

Pond thought it a mistake. So did Mouton, but they ordered their men up the slope, the several regiments still being in column. Three of McClernand's regiments, the 8th and 18th Illinois and the 13th Indiana(?), held the timber that skirted Cavalry field in front.

Running over the rim and onto the open ground came the blue coated Louisianians, their advance being closely watched by one of Veatch's Illinois officers.

"[They] dashed up the slope...with a loud yell, square in the face of McClernand's men, and in front fo two [24] pounder [guns]," observed the officer.

"The yell was...taken out of them," wrote a jubliant Federal officer, "but right faced and went off in such good order that a shell from one of the [cannon] cut the same thigh off a file of four, and then cut a file closer--a sergeant, nearly in two."

Having taken losses that amounted to 207 3 officers and men, or about 40 percent of those present, the 18th Louisiana staggered away to the north and out of the fighting for the day."

Legend

Shiloh...Sunday, April 6, 1862

O KIA (Killed In Action)

O Died of Wounds

O WIA (Wounded in Action)

O MIA (Missing in Action)

O Captured...Prisoner

The Legend depicted above and to the left reflects a composite of the 18th Regiment Louisiana Infantry as it may have looked that fateful day with the men advancing up the walls of the ravine. According to the records, the 18th Regiment fielded some "500" men for this day's battle. Taking into account that the regiment consisted of 10 companies, it would stand to reason that the companies averaged some 50 men each. (It is understandable that the companies had more in some cases and in other cases...less men.) We will use these figures in this graphic depiction. Due to scarcity of records, this researcher is assuming some points.

The carnage appears to be directed into the center of the formation with the two end companies being less affected while the compaines compromising the center of the formation taking the more intense fire...or so it appears. The reader can draw his/her own conclusions.

It should also be noted that the notation "Captured...Prisoner" is somewhat biased. Many of the men who were wounded were unable to make it off the field of battle and were thus listed as "Missing in Action" with the majority of these being later being confirmed as "Wounded and Taken Prisoner".

The reader will also notice the group of men listed as "Co. Not Known". The official records list a set of figures as to the casualities of this engagement. The Muster Roll records (of which some are missing) along with the mens' individual records in Booths' books do not agree. Being there is no record to confirm ALL of the casuality figures...it is the assumption of this researcher that the other casualities would naturally fall into the catagory of "Missing in Action".

The battlefield report 4, dated April 6-7, 1862, No. 180. by Col. Preston Pond, Jr. lists the following casuality figures for the 18th Regiment Louisiana Infantry.

Killed............................13
Seriously Wounded...........80
Missing in Action............118

After listing the men by company and compiling a total of each catagory, the final total [by this researcher] that can be accounted for is 167. The report listed above in the text indicate a Aggregate Total of 211. This may reflect BOTH days of the Battle of Shiloh and, would stand to reason, it did. This figure would allow a difference of some 45 men...unnacounted for and ultimately listed as MISSING in ACTION.
